At my place of work we are required to use swipe cards for access to the buildings and most main doors between sections within buildings.  When going to the toilet for example, we would need to use the swipe card to re-enter our office.

What I find annoying is there have been numerous occasions when I have gone to wash my hands, someone else is washing and drying his hands very slowly - for over a minute, and he keeps drying them until I have finished.  This person then tailgates me so that he can re-enter the office without putting the effort in to get his own swipe card out.

I have become aware of this laziness and lead these people into a false sense of security so that they think I am leaving.  However, suddenly I discover that I have a shoelace undone just as I get to the doors that require the swipe card.  Of course I have to kneel down immediately and tie it.

Other tactics I use include having the wrong pass so I cannot let them in, (but I do have it with me for use if I am on my own), etc. or going back into the toilet for some tissue.

Most of these men are generally bad mannered and have an element of insecurity in their personality in my opinion.  I hope that this unpredictability of trying to exploit and be opportunistic of my efforts makes them feel even more insecure.

Some of them have even given me a dirty look when I pass them, which to me means that they probably have a guilty conscience.  If it were by chance, they would not have been so aggrieved that they had to get their swipe card out as that would have been their original intention and therefore thought nothing of it.  They know they were caught out.

This is a moralistic view of what lazy people who exploit the goodwill of others are like and I totally agree.

Whilst not bothered should someone quite by chance follow behind me, I too don't like those who wait for me to make the first move and rely on others to do their work.

You may think I am sad, but being moralistic, I don't get on well with those who expect to take a lot but give very little, which has something of a similarity with htis gripe.

Such people are opportunistic and want to take advantage of others because they are obsessed with greed and laziness. They probably haven't achieved much in life because they don't respect or treat others like they expect to be treated.

Look for reasons to criticise ones like me and you must also be sad.

I for one believe that those who think we are sad, are sick or psychologically warped, and so would rather be moralistic than this.

We have swipe cards also, it seems these "door hoverers" are a common beast in the workplace.

Usually they have left their card on their desk and cant get back in top the office after a trip to the coffe machine etc. To taunt the "cardless" on the other side of the glass door I usually give a cheery wave or a thumbs up and continue past the door as if I dont know what they want. This leads to frantic motioning by the person trying to get my attention which is quite funny, I then make a big show of trying to find my card just to wind it up some more.

Happy days!

Its the little things in life that make office life go faster

Yeah, I see where you are coming from.

We have a similar system at work and have the same kind of people, lazy. They will wait by a door for me to get my card out, engaging me in minor chitchat trying to throw me. They won`t need anything from the stores unless I`m going, won`t want a cuppa unless I am making one. It does annoy me at times but you have to laugh at the inventiveness of these idlers. You have to look at it as a give and take thing. I have raced in front of people saying "let me use my card" making a big thing over it and then holding the door open, ushering people through, thanking each one. Equally, I have also just stood at the door and said " are you getting your card out or are we standing here all day? "

A good gripe, glad I am not the only one.

I hope you will enjoy my future gripe....People who miss the point of a gripe and focus on the psychology of the poster.

Somehow I think you need to see a SHRINK. Your one very SAD person.

I totally agree with the other comment. If this is your only worry in life then you are one very lucky person. I would suggest you actually get a life and then this sort of thing wouldn't worry you at all.

Wow....... you really must have a boring life. If you only have things like this to worry about then I would consider yourself to be very lucky.
