Why is everyone so superficial these days?
As I get older (58 years young) and reflect on life that though people in general have more spending power, more consumable income than 50 years ago; I have to ask are they really more content than people in the 1950s and early 1960s?
People seem so superficial in that appearance is so important. Its a must have generation with clothes, shoes and other consumables. People want freedom to do their thing, though not realising that with this freedom comes responsibility to others as well as to oneself. Actions have consequences and considerations for others would make one feel better and of course may make others happy.
People and society are complicated and there is no simple solution to the problems in life certainly not those promoted by politicians. Maybe its time for people to stand back and see how they can help themselves, usually making some effort for themselves would be a start.
In school perhaps children should be taught its only a temporary pleasure in craving or, wanting things. Children should be made aware that concern and respect for others may provide a greater sense of self fulfilment. Obviously not all children will buy into this, but some might and least it would be a start.
Some people say Christian Religion should be emphasized more in life. I think a more secular but ethical moral instruction would be more appropriate. May be it is time for responsible socialism.

"You only have to watch the films from the 1940s to realize how well mannered and well spoken people were.. Jump forward 60 years (Eastenders,Big Brother). Wow.. How things have progressed.. Give humanity another 40 years and I reckon folk will be dragging their knuckles across the floor!."
I assume you are referring to British films? If so, I take it that you actually believe the "well-mannered and well-spoken" actors of the 1940s were representative of the majority of British people?
I must confess to never having watched the films to which you refer as examples of modernity: 'Eastenders', or 'Big Brother' (is this a remake of '1984') however from your comments I assume that the actors use regional accents which may be more representative of the common man.

And these are the heroes of our children.
But nobody wants to give these up when they are mostly being made at the expense of some poor beggar in the third world without a pot to piddle in. In fact the only time people buy or do anything ethical is when it may improve their status. This is not just me being cynical, it is a sad fact I'm afraid, these days most people are shallow, self absorbed or worse.
This planet will only be saved by intervention from another race, one out there in the galaxy.
Brace yourself my dears for the next major conflict is looming and this one is big! How do I know you may ask? I've seen it.
It is still possible to enjoy many of the material things that life brings but equally there has to be a balance on the more, shall we say, spiritual issues of existence. As a small child of the 1950's, my background was ordinary, being neither rich nor in poverty; I am far more materially blessed than my ancestors.......but the day to day pressures of life are high; with worry over the environment, more wars, expectations of work performance, fear of job losses, rip-off merchants, and so on and so on. Everyone today is trying to make money off someone else's misfortune or loss; or house, car or land, or the compensation culture, it's an endless list. Money is the only thing that the average dozy Brit dreams of today because that's the way the country has been driven by politicians and business. People have "lost it", somewhere, in a country that no longer understands anything other than "must have it all now, as long as it's cheap".
