Men who leave their shirt unbuttoned

Is there an uglier male fashion than a smart suit worn with an unbuttoned shirt and no tie?  Almost invariably displayed on television nowadays by politicians and newscasters attempting to look "cool and with it", the actual result is that we are obliged to stare at several inches of pallid neck, bobbing Adam's apple and sparsely haired chest - thus distracting us from the seriousness of the news story.

Men should button up their shirt and wear a tie

It's noticeable that this style of undress has largely become the habit of middle aged men (John Prescott is now doing it - heaven help us!).  It can't be long, therefore, before style-conscious younger men switch to something more becoming than a smart suit and an unbuttoned shirt.

May I suggest two alternatives to this scruffy fashion?  Try the Nehru Jacket which was very popular in the 70's – this style of jacket is actually based on the Indian sherwani apparently (see Wikipedia).  It's smart, attractive and colourful, not to mention the fact that the high collar covers up those nasty double chins and unattractive wobbly throats perfectly!

Alternatively, how about the exquisitely-tied cravats worn by those 18th-Century dandies?  At any rate though, let’s loose the scruffy unbuttoned shirt thing and let's bring tasteful good looks back to our television screens!

My Gripe is with those who wear suits and No ties. In my view suits should be worn with a tie and preferably with the top button of the shirt open.
I do not like the look of a suit with no Tie and hence the compromise of wearing the tie with the shirt collar open is an extremely good compromise. You have the best of both worlds.
But no tie at all with the suit looks just plain ugly. It gives the impression that one does not want to look smart.
I appreciate that some find a tie uncomfortable hence the open collar option is better than No tie at all. Some say it is more fashionable not too wear a tie. And I am aware it is not approved of in the Hospitals as they regard ties as unhealthy . That is the only exception, However, I am hoping that theb trend of no Ties with suits will be reversed and that the loose tie open collar option will prevail.

Depends on the suit. It can look great tieless but it has to be the right kind of suit and shirt and has to be worn in the right kind of setting.
A double breasted suit, a style that doesn't flatter a lot of men, is quite formal and should have a tie. A single breasted suit, worn with an obviously formal shirt but without a tie looks wrong. But if you wear it with a soft shirt (say a buttondown oxford and the suit is not too 'businessy') and you're socialising it can look great (shoes and belt are important too).
My gripe is with blokes who don't tie their ties properly (I love ties). Will blokes PLEASE stop this massive tie knot business. It was a rubbish look to begin with and belongs firmly in the mid seventies and it's also now over. For anyone still indulging in this crap look, you do not resemble off duty footballers or captains of industry, you look like tossers or at best like a 12 year old trying on his dad's suit for the first time. Please use a classic 'four in hand' or at most a 'half windsor - with a dimple'. I'll show you if you like but it will cost you £25...

Totally agree a suit with no tie looks crap like you haven't tried to look sharp. If you are uncomfortable with a tie just loosen your collar same feeling of looseness and you look sharper

I was at Aintree on Saturday and I could not se one guy who had his tie on witht he top button fastened and more than a few with no socks on with their shoes so it goes to show that socklessness is coming back again this summer a a fashion statement.

Do you really think anyone gives a monkey's toss about how you dress? Why don't you go and find a website for narcissistic pathetic perverts and leave this one for grown ups?

Well personally sockless wonder I say it is a good look it is a fashion that has been around since last summer I often go to work suited and booted with no socks on it is a good look and gets loads of comments. In our office it is quite common to see one of the guys wearing no socks with his suit, more so in the warmer months, I think I started a trend in the office lat summer. I did it and soon a load followed , they must have been wondering whether to do it or not, so I must have given the green light. Do you go sockless or where you just asking?
