Men who leave their shirt unbuttoned

Is there an uglier male fashion than a smart suit worn with an unbuttoned shirt and no tie?  Almost invariably displayed on television nowadays by politicians and newscasters attempting to look "cool and with it", the actual result is that we are obliged to stare at several inches of pallid neck, bobbing Adam's apple and sparsely haired chest - thus distracting us from the seriousness of the news story.

Men should button up their shirt and wear a tie It's noticeable that this style of undress has largely become the habit of middle aged men (John Prescott is now doing it - heaven help us!).  It can't be long, therefore, before style-conscious younger men switch to something more becoming than a smart suit and an unbuttoned shirt.

May I suggest two alternatives to this scruffy fashion?  Try the Nehru Jacket which was very popular in the 70's this style of jacket is actually based on the Indian sherwani apparently (see Wikipedia).  It's smart, attractive and colourful, not to mention the fact that the high collar covers up those nasty double chins and unattractive wobbly throats perfectly!

Alternatively, how about the exquisitely-tied cravats worn by those 18th-Century dandies?  At any rate though, lets loose the scruffy unbuttoned shirt thing and let's bring tasteful good looks back to our television screens!

Not loose, as in scruffy loose. Just a tad loose with a really nice double windsor.

Loosen off in this cold weather? Go without a tie altogether? Not likely. I keep the shirt and tie tight - looks smart too. I seem to find more and more blokes going loose or open necked these days though. Seems we're more diverse than a few years ago, which makes the smart look stand out I think.

Tie Right - 5-Feb-12 22:08

If only you were right Goonhilly (about no-one wearing ties). There are still a lot around, albeit not always as tightly done up as they used to be at least at the end of the day. Seems HowLoose is single-handedly changing mens' behaviour and helping us loosen off. Office standards can expect you to wear the noose properly up though which is a right pain. Makes loosening off v appealing.

Ties are a dead fashion item, hardly anyone wears the ridiulous garments. You can't beat a fit girl in a tie though.

Button up what a pile of crap Ties, Cravats, Dog collers, Tie a piece of rag round your neck. Bit like a shackle aint it. Very restrictive and pointless. Like no tie no entry. Its a joke. Forced to have a bit rag round your neck that costs a packet. Me I'll wear a low cut blouse the women can and they get in. Equality but some are more equal than others Ha ha.

Hi How Loose I don't think that I wear my tie that loose it is noticable to see that top button is undone though I have the knot inbetwen the top and second button. After I gte back to normal I will be fastening my top button again though for a smarter look

You don't look scruffy as long as you don't wear your tie very loose. No need to fasten the top button even when you've lost weight.

Dead right, Danny. I personally feel that the best way is to tie a windsor, keep the top button of the shirt open and then pull the tie gently into the space. It looks more stylish and is also more comfortable.

Sorry to hear about your accident, hope things are improving.

I was looking at the posts on this site most seem to endorse wearing their shirt an tie with top button undone. I personally believe that this was always a scruffy look. I have been off work with a broken arm and a leg following an accident in jan. I bought new shirts in December for my work now being off I have put on a bit of weight and the collars are now to tight , so I am having to wear them with th ecollar button undone and have felt that I amybe looked scruffy reading this kind of makes me feel like it not so

Late summer early fall, I started wearing my shirts with 3 or 4 buttons undone. Kind of an obnoxious hotshot look. I really liked it. It made me feel fasionable and masculine .... looking forward to the weather breaking so I can start it up again. How do other guys feel about this look? and do most men have the confidence to do it?

No I do not , Dave. I thoroughly approve of it and encourage it. You need to be comfortable and it is also nice to wear a tie while at the same time being comfortable.

Do you guys consider having a loose tie as scruffy? I have never in my life fastened and pushed up my tie, not at school, sixth form, weddings, funerals, jobs interviews nothing and I never will. Some do it because they have bought the wrong sized collar and can't physically fasten it, but I do it just out of comfort. I hear people all the time saying that they hate waring ties because they feel stangled, it does not bother me as I have to wear one for work as long as top button undone

Being Criticised for leaving the cufflinks in my shirt when I roll my sleeves up really annoys me. I much prefer to leave the links in my shirt when I roll my sleeves up as it is easier when It comes to rolling them down and I do not have to line up the button holes to put the Links in , I just have to do the Links up. I have been criticised for doing this as it is against fashion "etiquette" and that I should remove my links from the shirt. I do not however agree that I should have to comply with so called fashion "etiquette."

People should be free to wear their clothing or accessories as they wish and not be subject to critiscm because you do not comply with the fashion rules. I have never lost a pair of links wearing them this way anyhow which another reason I was told I should not do this. I notice that I am not the only one to wear my cufflinks in this way so others must also agree with me that it is ok to do this.

It is just so annoying that the so called "fashion police" on Clothing forums etc think they have the right to tell you what is right and what is wrong in terms of the way you wear your clothing and accessories. It is I believe each individual`s choice and not having to comply with so called "rules" after all that is what makes us all individual.

it all depends on how you want to look and if someone wants to look and dress a certain way then that is their right and choice. besides if everyone looked the same we would be living in a very dull world indeed.

Just let others be as they choose, and focus on what is important in your life. If you're watching for news, then put your concentration there. If you have attention deficit problems, then solve this, treating the cause of your lack of attention, rather than the symptoms that show you have it.

there is no need for there to be an awful stench if you use talc, anti-persparant or foot and shoe spray

"The sockless trend is really big this summer. Plimsoles are a massive fashion trend and wearing them with socks is a serious n no."

That explains that awful stench!
