Why do some drivers think that the middle lane on motorways is the correct one to use at all times, and don’t they realize that by doing so they are effectively blocking off the nearside lane to all other road users.  I have my own personal acronym for such people M.O.R.O.N.S.  (middle of the road obstructive nuisances).

Why do learner drivers not receive training on how to drive on motorways?  As soon as they pass their driving test are allowed to do this without any guidance!  I don’t really blame them I just blame the system.  I talk from the point of view of someone who drives over sixty thousand miles a year and have done for over forty years.

Traffic at night on the M25, middle lane drivers

I have recently driven from Southampton to Antwerp in Belgium via Dover ferries.  An amazingly simple motorway journey the whole way - just 280 miles.  My gripe is the enormous number of inconsiderate motorists who block up the middle lane (and often the outside lane) on the British motorways.  The French and Belgium motorways were in fact more congested throughout both journeys.

However I was not forced to slow down as both the French and Belgium drivers have far better road sense and allow the faster traffic to pass by automatically moving to the nearside (or middle) lanes as soon as they have passed a slower moving vehicle.

The benefits are two fold - even though there was heavier traffic it flowed without bunching up, and everyone was aware of the traffic around them.  The second benefit is that the driving is therefore much more relaxed and less stressful on the continent with average speeds and fuel consumption greatly improved.

Drive off the ferry in Dover and we are back to the UK style - I have paid my Road Fund tax and I am going to sit in the middle lane and let everyone going even a little faster all bunch up behind me. This attitude often causes a domino effect.  The average speed will drop down to 30-40mph as one car pushes out and takes 2 miles to overtake a middle lane moron doing just 65 mph.

Why not learn from our continental neighbours who know how to drive properly and make things easier for ourselves!  Use your mirrors and move over even if there is no one directly behind you - It does make sense and I hope you agree!

Many years ago I seem to remember that motorways were:
Inside lane for slow traffic
Middle lane for fast traffic
Outer lane for overtaking and very fast traffic

However the current highway code states that you should not stay in the middle lane to overtake a line of lorries but weave in and out!

I hog the middle lane when overtaking a line of lorries as I consider it much safer than weaving in and out!

What's the point of the outer lane of a three lane motorway, if we are all meant to stick in the inner lane?

Its seems to me that he outer lane is completely hogged by the world's worst drivers, these mad racing types, foot down at 120 mph. You see them and their cars in pile ups everywhere.

Ask yourself why do larger, faster cars cost more to insure. Answer: the people who buy them are a far greater risk to all others on the roads.

The inner lane is meant for crawlers. The central lane is meant for those who can achieve at least 50 mph going up hill. The outer lane is meant for those who can achieve 65 mph going up hill.

That was very well quoted from one of his articles.

It's quite simple really. They are CLODS actually. Centre lane only drivers. They fear the first lane as they don't want to have to think too much about judging when to overtake the inevitable lorry, truck or caravan doing 55mph that they will inevitably face if they pull in. Unfortunately they drive like they are on a 30mph road and so leave so little gap behind the car in front that no one can safely overtake in front of them either. There is probably a bit of the place in the queue mentality going on as well in their mind. But they are also scared of the outside lane from the Audi and BMW tailgaters who falsh their lights and push the traffic to clear in front of them with their extended appendages.

If it's raining it's even worse. People who normally get the train and bus get in a car and have absolutely no idea that a motorway is any different from their road and so drive at 30 mph.

Autobahn indeed! You great poofter. I'll bet you drive a silver German car.

I was driving on a German Autobahn last week and they have a Traffic Radio which keeps motorists advised of conditions - in several languages. There were several requests for drivers to 'stay in the correct lane at all times and do not change lanes in heavy traffic and keep as to the right except for overtaking.'

I totally agree!
Its time for some TV public information advertising to point out the errors (and dangers) of this driving style.

I think that the main problem is that some drivers seem to think that you choose the lane according to the speed that you are travelling, instead of the traffic density. As you point out some drivers even stick to the outside lane at 70+ mph. As far as I remember the Highway Code referrs to the outside lane as the 'overtaking lane', not the I'm travelling at 80mph lane.

The problem is going to become even worse as motorways are upgraded to 4 lanes, as the middle hoggers will then stay in the 3rd lane.

I agree 100%. It particularly annoys me when thy bar doing 60 mph in the middle lane and I come up at 70 in the inside lane - I ahve eithr to undertake illgally or pull out across all thre lanes to overtake.

Lets start a club The mloc ,the middle lane owners club. If your car is worth say £15 000 you can t drive in the middle lane,& if it worth less less than £60 000 you can t drive drive in the fast lane,so important people get to work on time Don t hold up range rover sports 4x4 s

Obviously, not everyone here has time for childish games.

I wish I could adopt or entertain the idea of driving a smaller car.

Alas, I drive a Golf VR6 2.8. Driving smaller engined cars would probably shave off £100 off my monthly petrol costs.

As for Morons, I generaly don't have a problem with them until they create the bunching up of cars. A fair few morons I encounter actually sit slightly slower than the lorries and as such are a real pain in the bum.

One thing I have done several times on a long motorway journey in light traffic is to overtake a moron, pull into the inside lane safely and drop back and repeat. The morons I've done this to have noticed and pulled into the inside lane also. Mission accomplished :) .
