Why do some drivers think that the middle lane on motorways is the correct one to use at all times, and don’t they realize that by doing so they are effectively blocking off the nearside lane to all other road users.  I have my own personal acronym for such people M.O.R.O.N.S.  (middle of the road obstructive nuisances).

Why do learner drivers not receive training on how to drive on motorways?  As soon as they pass their driving test are allowed to do this without any guidance!  I don’t really blame them I just blame the system.  I talk from the point of view of someone who drives over sixty thousand miles a year and have done for over forty years.

Traffic at night on the M25, middle lane drivers

I have recently driven from Southampton to Antwerp in Belgium via Dover ferries.  An amazingly simple motorway journey the whole way - just 280 miles.  My gripe is the enormous number of inconsiderate motorists who block up the middle lane (and often the outside lane) on the British motorways.  The French and Belgium motorways were in fact more congested throughout both journeys.

However I was not forced to slow down as both the French and Belgium drivers have far better road sense and allow the faster traffic to pass by automatically moving to the nearside (or middle) lanes as soon as they have passed a slower moving vehicle.

The benefits are two fold - even though there was heavier traffic it flowed without bunching up, and everyone was aware of the traffic around them.  The second benefit is that the driving is therefore much more relaxed and less stressful on the continent with average speeds and fuel consumption greatly improved.

Drive off the ferry in Dover and we are back to the UK style - I have paid my Road Fund tax and I am going to sit in the middle lane and let everyone going even a little faster all bunch up behind me. This attitude often causes a domino effect.  The average speed will drop down to 30-40mph as one car pushes out and takes 2 miles to overtake a middle lane moron doing just 65 mph.

Why not learn from our continental neighbours who know how to drive properly and make things easier for ourselves!  Use your mirrors and move over even if there is no one directly behind you - It does make sense and I hope you agree!

I wish I could adopt or entertain the idea of driving a smaller car.

Alas, I drive a Golf VR6 2.8. Driving smaller engined cars would probably shave off £100 off my monthly petrol costs.

As for Morons, I generaly don't have a problem with them until they create the bunching up of cars. A fair few morons I encounter actually sit slightly slower than the lorries and as such are a real pain in the bum.

One thing I have done several times on a long motorway journey in light traffic is to overtake a moron, pull into the inside lane safely and drop back and repeat. The morons I've done this to have noticed and pulled into the inside lane also. Mission accomplished :) .

I have had to endure driving a Nissan Micra 1.0 for the past 3 weeks; what a thoroughly horrible little car.

I would not dare venture near the middle lane of any motorway; the hard shoulder would be more appropriate because of it's pathetic lack of power and dreadful directional stability.

Phil: I have a Nissan Micra too, one of the new style ones ... called Lucy. She doesn't vibrate at 60, actually she goes like a little dingbat, but I prefer to stick to 55/60 in the inside lane too. I try not to annoy the lorries, who are unable to go more than 60, but otherwise I find I get to my destination just as quickly and far less stressed. I get 48 miles to the gallon out of Lucy, driving carefully ... what do you get out of your's?

Hm, driving standards could improve, certainly. But "just 65 mph"? That seems very, very fast to me.

I never get annoyed by middle lane drivers. Why? I have a Nissan Micra 1.0 and it starts vibrating uncomfortably at 60 mph. There's nothing wrong with the car. It's just best at 55. So that's what I do, 55. I stay in the inside lane and let everybody overtake me.

Sometimes I see a lorry coming and I don't want to be in the way so I speed up to avoid being overtaken but after a while I tend to slip back in speed and the lorry will overtake me.

Since I have adopted this new style of driving, staying at or below the speed limit at all times, I have noticed many benefits. My petrol costs are down, my repair bills are lower. Best of all, the frustration of being stuck behind someone slower has been magically lifted from my shoulders and placed firmly on those of the driver behind.

Middle lane morons: Apart from the obvious annoyance of these clowns, and the controversial undertaking being illegal, which I totally disagree with. My interpretation of the law is you can undertake if the traffic in the other lanes is moving more slowly than you . Anyhow I digress my point is, people in general complain that motorway driving is boring, if driver's actually changed lanes as they should then their journeys would not be so boring and it may also be a remedy for driver fatigue. What do you think?

Hicks go and play with the traffic, you might learn something. And if you don't, your demise will be a benefit to society.

Again, utter nonsense from MikeP. He says in some circumstances it is Legal to overtake. Well Yes, But when the car you want to overtake is doing 45mph?!
*Mr Hicks  03-Aug-2009 18:49

Overtaking on the left, as I have been told by a police officer in UK who stopped me for doing so in sheer frustration at some old codger in a Rover doing 45 mph, is legal under appropriate circumstances. That does not prevent them charging you with driving without due care and attention or whatever they choose. I got a warning from a very pleasant cop who fully understood my frustration. I respectfully suggested that he should have stopped the Rover driver for obstruction.

As for the French, they have many nasty habits both on and off the road. After overtaking they are taught to return to their lane as quickly as possible, which means they often cut sharply in front of the vehicle they've overtaken. I find this dangerous and irritating.

I get a bit fed up with people saying what good drivers the continentals are. with regard to idiot middle lane hoggers in the UK; we have exactly the opposite problem to the continent. Their M/ways are infested with "weaver birds", no sooner have they pulled in they immediately pull out to overtake. They seem to regard the outside lane as a danger area and can't wait to get out of it when in fact the most danger occurs when actually changing lanes. It is a matter of judgement at the time using courtesy and safety as factors, something the French in particular can't seem to master. They cut in and out far too abruptly and fast. If you are towing or in a truck and just about to overtake a weaver will suddenly zoom out from behind in a second which is both stupid and dangerous, not to mention inconsiderate. I do notice that they do not get too excited if someone inconsiderately pulls out to overtake in front when they are zooming down the outside lane, but then, they all do it so they expect and accept it.

'Get Real'

I don't know which part of the country you drive in but the M5 in Somerset and Devon and the M50 in Gloucestershire are examples of uncongested motorways where 'stray in lane' as you put it would be a very silly way to drive and is certainly very far from being 'the rule', quite apart from being extremely inconsiderate, selfish and illegal.

V, you have my full support! There are vehicles which are not allowed in the third lane, but these idiots just don't care!
