Flower delivery, pizza delivery or food delivery of any sort wont give you a problem because the chances are you'll be at home when you order them or someone will be in to take the delivery. Home delivery for any sort of applicance such as a fridge or washing machine is another matter. It's all very well to go into the store and buy the goods with a home delivery but there is a slight problem. You're going to have to take the day off work or make special arrangements for someone to house sit and wait for them to arrive.
It's a nightmare scenario that we've all faced at some time or other having parted with our hard earned cash in the showroom or signed up to some low interest credit deal.

Try sweet talking the retailer into delivering at a time that is convenient to you though and you'll come up against that familiar brick wall of 'we only deliver during office hours' or 'we do not deliver at weekends'.

'We only deliver during office hours' 'Monday to Friday only'

Home delivery and e-commerce

Do they seriously think that we all sit around at home during the day with nothing better to do than wait at home until it is convenient for them to deliver? Unless you are retired or unemployed this is just not going to happen.

The answer to all your problems have now been solved with Direct Sitters - www.directsitters.co.uk

Direct Sitters is a short term house sitting service, just for this problem. Direct Sitters provide CRB/police checked, fully insured, vetted, and trustworthy female house sitters to stay and wait for your deliveries, plumbers, or tradesman like Sky to come to your home while you go to work.

There is now no reason for people to take out days out of there annual leave lose out on a day's income or work, just so you can get that freezer, sofa, or the washing machine fixed. We spend far to much with these companies for them to expect us to fork out even more money by losing out on a day's pay just to wait on the product which we bought from them to be delivered.

Direct Sitters save you time, money and the incovenience of taking day's off and losing out on much needed cash from working. www.directsitters.co.uk

needed a freezer next day delivery and chose Boots because they offer this sevice. In the morning, I spoke to a very helpful salesperson and was told that I would be contacted with a delivey slot. I did not ask for the old freezer to be taken away as we would not have time to defrost and dry it. That evening I was contacted to say delivery would be a day later than promised - they were "terribly sorry".
We rearranged our plans and defrosted and dried the old freezer. I rang to ask for it to be collected when the new one was delivered. They were "terribly sorry" or maybe she said "very sorry" but I had not rung early enough to arrange this.
The phone rang and an automated voice told us the delivery slot - Thursday 12 - 4pm.
The driver did not contact us. The firm did not contact us. At 3.45pm I rang, They were ".......SORRY" but they couldn't deliver till next Monday. I cancelled the order and I'm "terribly sorry but" I won't be buying online from Boots in the foreseeable future.

I really dislike the attitude of the delivery guys that have posted comments on this page. Normally I just see this extremely annoying, just like stores and stuff that's only open during office hours, but this is more upsetting. You should have a service attitude towards your costumers and not see all of us as abusive! You can feel whatever you want about people that behaves like you're describing, but that has NOTHING to do with me, because I've never done that, and neither the other people that has commented this page by the sound of it. Handling the costumers that are "difficult" is PART OF YOUR JOB and has nothing to do with the problem we're talking about here! I also agree with Jessop, what about working hours for restaurant staff and others? I used to work with elderly care, and of course I was working outside of office hourse, because it's once again PART OF THE JOB because that's what suited the elderly people best("the costumers")! And it should be part of yours as well for the good costumers that only want the stuff without loosing loads of money due to lost salaries/holidays!

How can you possibly deny this problem? You must loose loads of money as well, because I've not been able to make several orders simply because I could never recieve it - it wouldn't be worth taking the day off work to wait for it and I'm never ever home during office hours(just like so many other people).

Class snobery has nothing to do with it - the service you are providing is for the benefit of the customer - it's supposed to be a customer based industry you are working in - if you dont like it, or don't like the hours then get a different job.

On Thursday I ordered a workstation from argos for home delivery. I was guaranteed (and it stated on the receipt) that it would arrive monday the 24th 7am - 1pm. We waited at home all day and received nothing, not even a phone call which was strange as I seem to remember giving them my contact number incase this happened. I phoned the help desk and was told it may arrive at night...wasnt very impressed but stayed in anyway. Guess what? It didnt arrive! Rang the helpdesk again who said it would probable arrive today (Tuesday 25th), but they could not guarantee a time. It is only 9am as I write this but I am not holding out for them.
It makes me wonder how at a time like this with the current credit crisis, how Argos can afford to have such a relaxed attitude towards customers.
I do not expect them to bring it upstairs, fit it for me, move my old items, hoover or dust. I just want what I have paid my hard earned money for.

Class snobery? no. if you have parted with your money and need a delivery/instilation then it should be convinient for the customer.
I am currently waiting on a delivery of a washing machine (hired), this is the second atempt as last time "the van broke down" costing me A wasted day off work! had a nightmare trying to get more time off (now have monday afternoon) and hope they come around the right time.
Oh and also they have already taken the first months rental out of my bank account even though I havent even seen the goods yet!
But it is perfectly in order to expect the delivery driver to mess up their social/family life by working evenings or weekends, probably without any increase in pay. Kettles, pots, class snobbery? If you follow that then what about people who have to work in restaurants, shops petrol stations etc maybe everything should shut down after 5pm then!

Too true Bill. I work in a service industry and cannot believe how stupid some people are regarding appointments. No matter what you do you can't win. If you want to visit during working hours then you get " It's no point coming on a Monday cos' I'm at work ! " or in the evenings it's "What time do you call this, I'm having my dinner " If you work weekends you get the " I'm not wasting my weekend waiting in for you, I only get two days off a week ".

It is always interesting that the people who have created the problem, I.E. when it is convenient to deliver the item that is too large to be brought home by car/public transport, are outraged that they have to take time off during the working week. But it is perfectly in order to expect the delivery driver to mess up their social/family life by working evenings or weekends, probably without any increase in pay. Kettles, pots, class snobbery?

Well if you think thats bad I work for a company called brighthouse they also are a pish to work for because they dont care about their workforce, they let you work 12 hours a day doing deliverys in unfit vans, bust tail lifts and very heavy schedules going from one part of the planet to the other, they have you out some days doing 9 white good packages for example washing machine, american fridge freezers, and the majority of customers live in the crows nests. I also have a pet hate- when people dont remove their old white goods before we deliver. It would make our lives a lot easier as delivery drivers if people werent so abusive and rudes towards us only trying to do our jobs
*buzz  12-Jul-2007 14:07

Argos drivers are super beings being able to life very very heavy items and put them wherever needed, plumb them in and even take the packaging away. They also do extras!
*acidgecko  04-Jul-2007 18:01

I think argos drivers are great always put items where needed even upstairs
