Home delivery at your convenience - what's that?

Flower delivery, pizza delivery or food delivery of any sort won't give you a problem because the chances are you'll be at home when you order them or someone will be in to take the delivery.  Home delivery for any sort of applicance such as a fridge or washing machine is another matter.

It's all very well to go into the store and buy the goods with a home delivery but there is a slight problem. You're going to have to take the day off work or make special arrangements for someone to house sit and wait for them to arrive.

It's a nightmare scenario that we've all faced at some time or other having parted with our hard earned cash in the showroom or signed up to some low interest credit deal.

Try sweet talking the retailer into delivering at a time that is convenient to you though and you'll come up against that familiar brick wall of 'we only deliver during office hours' or 'we do not deliver at weekends'.  Home delivery and e-commerce The concept of flexible delivery times seems to be an alien concept to some of these companies, and yet there are others out there that will bend over backwards and try to be accommodating.

We only deliver during office hours - Monday to Friday only

Do they seriously think that we all sit around at home during the day with nothing better to do than wait at home until it is convenient for them to deliver?  Unless you are retired or unemployed this is just not going to happen.  We all have busy working lives and have to earn a living so so what do you do?

it is allways best to sort out the delivery arrangements beforehand so that you don't end up in this predicament. the problem is that people don't read small print. companies write the terms and conditions in a very long winded way as well as putting it in miniscule lettering to try and catch you out. what you must do is read the tiny lettering so that you can get the last laugh.

We spend far to much with these companies for them to expect us to fork out even more money by losing out on a day's pay just to wait on the product which we bought from them to be delivered.

Direct Sitters save you time, money and the incovenience of taking day's off and losing out on much needed cash from working. www.directsitters.co.uk

Direct Sitters - 24-Apr-10 01:33

needed a freezer next day delivery and chose Boots because they offer this sevice. In the morning, I spoke to a very helpful salesperson and was told that I would be contacted with a delivey slot. I did not ask for the old freezer to be taken away as we would not have time to defrost and dry it. That evening I was contacted to say delivery would be a day later than promised - they were "terribly sorry".
We rearranged our plans and defrosted and dried the old freezer. I rang to ask for it to be collected when the new one was delivered. They were "terribly sorry" or maybe she said "very sorry" but I had not rung early enough to arrange this.
The phone rang and an automated voice told us the delivery slot - Thursday 12 - 4pm.
The driver did not contact us. The firm did not contact us. At 3.45pm I rang, They were ".......SORRY" but they couldn't deliver till next Monday. I cancelled the order and I'm "terribly sorry but" I won't be buying online from Boots in the foreseeable future.

No Dealer - 17-May-09 00:06

I really dislike the attitude of the delivery guys that have posted comments on this page. Normally I just see this extremely annoying, just like stores and stuff that's only open during office hours, but this is more upsetting. You should have a service attitude towards your costumers and not see all of us as abusive! You can feel whatever you want about people that behaves like you're describing, but that has NOTHING to do with me, because I've never done that, and neither the other people that has commented this page by the sound of it. Handling the costumers that are "difficult" is PART OF YOUR JOB and has nothing to do with the problem we're talking about here! I also agree with Jessop, what about working hours for restaurant staff and others? I used to work with elderly care, and of course I was working outside of office hourse, because it's once again PART OF THE JOB because that's what suited the elderly people best("the costumers")! And it should be part of yours as well for the good costumers that only want the stuff without loosing loads of money due to lost salaries/holidays!

How can you possibly deny this problem? You must loose loads of money as well, because I've not been able to make several orders simply because I could never recieve it - it wouldn't be worth taking the day off work to wait for it and I'm never ever home during office hours(just like so many other people).

Class snobery has nothing to do with it - the service you are providing is for the benefit of the customer - it's supposed to be a customer based industry you are working in - if you dont like it, or don't like the hours then get a different job.

Pete - 10-Dec-08 16:09

On Thursday I ordered a workstation from argos for home delivery. I was guaranteed (and it stated on the receipt) that it would arrive monday the 24th 7am - 1pm. We waited at home all day and received nothing, not even a phone call which was strange as I seem to remember giving them my contact number incase this happened. I phoned the help desk and was told it may arrive at night...wasnt very impressed but stayed in anyway. Guess what? It didnt arrive! Rang the helpdesk again who said it would probable arrive today (Tuesday 25th), but they could not guarantee a time. It is only 9am as I write this but I am not holding out for them.
It makes me wonder how at a time like this with the current credit crisis, how Argos can afford to have such a relaxed attitude towards customers.
I do not expect them to bring it upstairs, fit it for me, move my old items, hoover or dust. I just want what I have paid my hard earned money for.

Class snobery? no. if you have parted with your money and need a delivery/instilation then it should be convinient for the customer.
I am currently waiting on a delivery of a washing machine (hired), this is the second atempt as last time "the van broke down" costing me A wasted day off work! had a nightmare trying to get more time off (now have monday afternoon) and hope they come around the right time.
Oh and also they have already taken the first months rental out of my bank account even though I havent even seen the goods yet!
But it is perfectly in order to expect the delivery driver to mess up their social/family life by working evenings or weekends, probably without any increase in pay. Kettles, pots, class snobbery? If you follow that then what about people who have to work in restaurants, shops petrol stations etc maybe everything should shut down after 5pm then!

Too true Bill. I work in a service industry and cannot believe how stupid some people are regarding appointments. No matter what you do you can't win. If you want to visit during working hours then you get " It's no point coming on a Monday cos' I'm at work ! " or in the evenings it's "What time do you call this, I'm having my dinner " If you work weekends you get the " I'm not wasting my weekend waiting in for you, I only get two days off a week ".

It is always interesting that the people who have created the problem, I.E. when it is convenient to deliver the item that is too large to be brought home by car/public transport, are outraged that they have to take time off during the working week. But it is perfectly in order to expect the delivery driver to mess up their social/family life by working evenings or weekends, probably without any increase in pay. Kettles, pots, class snobbery?

Well if you think thats bad I work for a company called brighthouse they also are a pish to work for because they dont care about their workforce, they let you work 12 hours a day doing deliverys in unfit vans, bust tail lifts and very heavy schedules going from one part of the planet to the other, they have you out some days doing 9 white good packages for example washing machine, american fridge freezers, and the majority of customers live in the crows nests. I also have a pet hate- when people dont remove their old white goods before we deliver. It would make our lives a lot easier as delivery drivers if people werent so abusive and rudes towards us only trying to do our jobs

Argos drivers are super beings being able to life very very heavy items and put them wherever needed, plumb them in and even take the packaging away. They also do extras!

I'm another argos driver and getting sick and tired of customers giving us abuse for things that are absolutley not our fault. We have got the right not too do your delivery if you are rude and abusive towards us. The purpose of our pre-call is to prepare you for your delivery, so why when we arrive are people rarely ready, I.E old sofas still in the room, clutter on the stairs, etcetra. And another thing, why do people who are due to get keys for their new home arrange delivery for that day? Alot of the time theres a delay in the process of recieving keys, plus do you really want more boxes lying around while you sort out your other items.

I also work for Argos the amount of customers that think that we are there as there personal removals person is unbeliveable. LOOK YOU ONLY PAY £5 FOR (DELIVERY) THIS DOES NOT MEAN WE ARE THERE TO UNPACK, MOVE YOUR OLD ITEMS, HOVER UP OR DUST FOR YOU. We are there to deliver a item that you or someone else for you has ordered NOTHING MORE. Oh and by the way please make sure you measure your doors so you wouldnt be disappointed if we cant get it in!!!!!!!

dutch - 19-Apr-07 18:56

I work for argos direct home delivery and Id like to know why do customers persist in giving the delivery driver hassle when all we do is deliver them. they are given a time slot of 7am-12, 10am-2pm or 12pm-6pm by the store/internet. You can guarantee that if we can try to get the deliveries off earlier then we will. a small tip for you if its a signed for delivery and your not in or cant get home to take delivery stick a signed note on your door with order number and a safe place to leave your item I.e shed, garage, back garden, neighbour then we are permitted to do that and it IS in OUR best interest to complete a delivery

People are told from 7am so why do they tell us at 7am "oh wasnt expecting you this early" which part of from 7am dont they understand? The times are approximate not exact we have to take into account roadworks/level crossings, traffic congestion especially between 8-9.30 on school runs and people going to work, delays at other deliveries etc so we do not guarantee the exact time given we usually say within a specified time ie 30 mins to an hour. Again if you are out at these times leave a signed note designating where you want the item and we will leave it where you request in a safe place

We are not there to be abused and insulted when something is missing or damaged or if theres any other problems that what customer services are for so have a go at them instead

We DO NOT take away old appliances or connect new ones unless you have paid for the deliver and connect service which is not done by argos direct drivers, we do NOT take away packaging or assemble items no matter what the store staff tell you.

As for going to an upstairs room it is based on weight, size and ease of access but this is at the discretion of the driver but we take into account the style of your staircase anything on the walls ie pictures/ornaments etc, we are NOT allowed to unpack items in case we damage them or the property

I try to avoid ordering anything which has a 'signed for' delivery. Whilst this is not often possible with large items such as 'white goods', I would rather order from people who send things by the regular post so I don't have to wait in ALL DAY, or just buy from a shop at my convenience. I have waited in before only to get a letter saying I was not at home!

I've just quit Comet after 11 years loyal service, they are such a poor company to work for, after I handed my notice 3 of my mangers refused to speak to me, acting like big kids because I left them in the busiest week of the year, but I had no choice they were putting me under so much stress. The delivery guys are always moaning about their management, it seems to do well as a Comet manager you have to be an uncaring nasty piece of work.

Argos is just as bad. We ordered something and were given a delivery date. It didn't arrive so I phoned and was given another date. It came next day which wasn't the date I was given and then the following week a duplicate item arrived. I phoned for them to collect the duplicate and was given a date but they didn't turn up for that either so it's in the kitchen waiting for another pick-up date. They told me that they didn't have a record at all of the item even though I'd got a delivery number.

I think you delivery drivers do an excellent job. I have worked as a scheduler for a couple of large delivery companies and realise that you guys are really up against it. I have been that guy having a go at a driver for not making his drop or missing a collection, but when you go home at the end of the day you think to yourself, you know they're only doing their best. Keep up the good work guys and don't get too stressed when out on the road, I know I would!
