Fed up with my unreliable VW Golf

I have always had old bangers whilst bringing up my family; I just couldn't really justify the expense of a new car.  However having put both children through university at great expense, I decided to treat myself.

I test drove a few models, but had a good feeling for this VW Golf.  You pay a bit extra but with German reliability you don't mind to certain extent.  I bought VW Golf 1.6SE FSI vehicle in May 06.  It has been back to the workshop about seven times for various problems since I have owned it.

I recently broke down on motorway (17/10/06); the car just lost power in fast lane which is extremely dangerous.  My wife and I were on hard shoulder for hour and half on this occasion.  A tow truck came out and he managed to get the car started.  The plan was that he would then follow us to the next junction, but we never actually got there as it broke down again with same problem.  In the end we had to be towed to my home address.

I rang Volkswagen in Leicester the next day for there prognosis whereupon the advised me to bring the car in.  I told them it wouldn't start and we arranged for VW Assistance to come over, get the car started so that I could get to the garage.  The car came back two days later and they informed me that it was all okay now they had updated the software.  I didn't quite understand that!

Two days later I broke down again, same problem as before; yet again towed to garage by VW Assistance.  The man who came out stated that he knew what the fault was as he plugged it into his laptop on the side of the road, he was 99.9% certain and he would be telling the garage when we got the car there.

I rang the next day to be told that the problem wasn't what the roadside assistant had said and that it was something else very confusing!  By now I've pretty much lost the all confidence in this car not knowing if I'm going to make it to my destination or not.

VW Golf keys During the week they have it in the workshop again; they ring me to say that on test run it has broken down again.  Strangely, they, they ask me who I used to tow me in before as they needed to get it back to VW Leicester.

After a week at the menders they proudly tell me my car is ready for collection, whoopee I thought!  Sadly my excitement was cut short, because when I picked the car up there is a rattle coming from the engine that wasn't there before.  Also they didnt put the grill back on that covers the tow hook at the front of car.

I am taking my Volkswagen back to Leicester on Mon 30th Oct.  I really don't want this car any more.  I have bought a load of rubbish and I would really like my money back, or perhaps a different that may restore my faith in Volkswagen again.

Ihave spoken with VW customer services but heard nothing since.

Volkswagen Golf is the most unreliable vehicle we have ever owned. We are on our second, both purchased from new, and this will certainly be our last. It has covered only 40k miles, but the faults just keep on mounting. The only saving grace is that "everything in life is not as reliable as a Volkswagen", because the world would be at a standstill! Absolute junk!

I have driven Volkswagens since 1996 and trust the brand. Now I drive a Caravelle VR6 and do as much service and repairs myself as possible. I am not very impressed by the VW service as they seem to use textbook soultions to tracing faults.
Recently VW told me that the air mass meter was faulty and needed to be changed. G70 and mixture adaption, the fault codes said. I was not willing to throw another £200 for something I had changed the year before so I went for a cheaper solution and changed relay no 167 for the fuel pump and the car started.:)

I can never work out why anyone thinks that a VW would be reliable. Was it the Paula Hamilton advert? They never come out well in reliability surveys (the japanese cars always win these). Internet forums are plastered with problems with VW cars. The german VW gearbox on my Ford certainly didn't last long.

What the point to put computer in the car to monitor the engine problem? Everything go wrong from most of the sensors itself !? It make life more complicate! Is it cost cutting? I don't think it is anything to do with good batch or bad batch of products! Bad is bad, no excuses! VW's mechanics can't fix their own problems!!!! Bring the old engine back and stay with it just put new shell on and make it look good, everyone will be more happy! Don't want anymore VW cars, RUBBLISH!

VW Polo fan, but no more! - 14-Jun-11 03:21

You get good cars and bad cars from all manufacturers. I had a VX Omega and it would be simpler to list what didn't go wrong! I also had two Rover 75's. The first broke down numerous times due to the same sensor problem that the dealers and Rover could not fix. The second ran perfectly for nearly 7 years and was still running perfectly when I traded it in. I have just bought a Mk Vl Golf - a 1.4 TSi DSG Match. Still done less than 1k miles - but so far I am delighted with it. Incredibly quiet and refined, very comfortable, and proving economical. Only time will tell with regards to reliability, but Golfs have very good residual values and they would not have that if the cars had a reputation for poor reliability.

I too have had issues with parts falling off my golf after a service at Leicester VW.
They let me leave the dealership with tyres that were more than dangerous because they didn't have any - (down to the canvas in some places), a broken driveshaft and a loose undertray.
I'm self employed so the time taken to sort it alone cost me 240pounds in lost income plus another 210 in parts.
I kicked off and went to trading standards, VW Leicester refunded me the cost of the service, which in my opinion they got off very lightly with!

I should not be helping you really Deb I hate German cars. First thing to check is that your fan belt is adjusted properly, Second that all battery & starter motor connections are aggressively cleaned then brushed with a film of engine oil. If all is ok you either have a lazy starter motor, a useless alternator or you have paid good British money for a cheap Chinese battery.

VW Bora 1.9 TDi, 1994.
Had a squeking sound, like rubber being rubbed togther, in time with the revolutions of my wheels. Sounded like the right hand side. That was yesterday. Today its now turned into a cluckin sound with quite a bad pull to the left. Had a new wheel bearing put in about 3 months ago, left hand side.
Any ideas?

ESP light on. Mine came on a few days after I bought my 2006 Golf. I managed to get VW to pay for 100% of the parts and 50% of the labour. It was the ESP pump. Should have cost £110, got it done for £142. Well done VW. They insisted that it had to have been serviced by a VW dealer over the last four years otherwise I would have had to have got a statement saying that VW parts had been used which would have been near impossible for me to do.
After 4 years it drops to 50% of parts, 50% of labour. Made it by two weeks.

I own a Golf FSi 59 reg, less then 30k on the clock. Electronic failure - yes, the infamous ESP OFF light - will cost upwards of £1000 to fix (until the next time). I have driven Golfs for 20+ years but never again. This is scandalous and potentially dangerous. VW should hang their heads in shame.
