UK electricity prices are getting too high

Over the past 18 months we have heard the rumours and seen press statements about Electricity prices rising, but it’s getting silly now.  Electricity prices here in the UK are just too high now.  Let’s go BACK TO BASICS.

Prior to privatisation under Margaret Thatcher, we all paid reasonable amounts for life sustaining products such as electricity gas and water.  But now it’s getting to the point where workers on lower salaries, the disabled, unemployed and pensioners are unable to afford these weekly or monthly bills.

I have 3 children and my average electricity bill used to be £40 a month and up to £60 in the winter.  When using the tumble dryer more regularly that might go up a little bit more.  Now my electricity bill is around £20 a week, and that’s without using the tumble dryer!  Electricity pylons - electricity prices in the UK are getting too high Our family has not grown and we haven’t added a games arcade to the shed or anything else that is power hungry, yet the electricity companies seem to charge more and more for the same amount of power.

My mother and father have the same problems as do my in-laws, we are all struggling to pay our monthly bills.  Bear in mind that this is before water meters become compulsory and the addition of waste charges.  Where is this going to end?

As British citizens we should ask for our utilities to come back under OUR control, not foreign companies or share holders.  Left as it is, we are going to have a severe crisis.

I did not ask for coal fires to be replaced with all these modern heating systems, it was forced upon me by local authorities.  I used to be able to keep warm by burning a lot of my waste, which saved on landfill and heating costs; also cooking by this method when using coal burning stove was also cheaper.  They forced these mod cons on us, telling us, they would save us time and money - what TOSH!  Its costing more now than ever before, and we cannot go back now to coal burners!

And we don’t seem to have any recourse for complaints.  They put a "watchdog" in place for us to make sure we get value for money..  Well HELLO?  It’s not actually working..  I seriously see big problems facing the UK and its getting worse by the month, these companies are making millions upon millions, and we see no benefits from this unless we are shareholders..  Corporate greed has overtaken the need for other fellow human beings to survive..  Just look at the Aberfan tragedy, enough said!

I am in a 3 bed flat all electric with a compulsory meter (the landlord won't have anything else) and without heating it costs nearly 30 a week - turn the heating on (timed) and it's 60. Thank God it has been a very mild winter.

75 kilowatt hours is only appprox £9.75 a week most of that would be consumed by using an electric cooker (DONT!)

What exactly is the point you are making?

This midwinter we are consuming 75 KWHours per week, no heating: just cooking and lighting - 3 bedroom flat. The biggest consumption is cooking plus two halogen lamps.

£5 a day for electricity indicates to me that you are not using the most efficient devices for heating and/or you do not use an off-peak tariff.

£5 a day at an average of 13p per kilowatt hour is 38 kilowatts hours use per day,std tariff.
This equates to:
One bar (one kilowatt) electric fire on for 38 hours
Two bar (two kilowatt) electric fire for 19 hours

At off-peak tariffs you can double this.

Suggest you use a one-two kilowatt halogen heater.

Gemma, electric fires are known to be extremely expensive. Are you on a PAYG meter?

My electric bill is £35 per week and that is with having only heating on a part of the house. I am struggling with this! This seems a fortune and I am careful to turn everything off when not in use etc

Just in case anyone is thinking of calling 'Paul Riley', that number is in Benito Juarez (Mexico) so most likely some kind of scam, or maybe he's just an idiot.

The Electricity companies are now owned by European companies including State owned interests, its about getting the maximum amount of our currency out of us and thats it.
Overseas governments would stop a UK buyer from taking over their water , gas and power because its an important infrastructure, they wont even let other close European countries do it, which has been evidenced in the blocking by some countries of others in electricity deals recently.
They are going to dump their old fuel rods in the UK now because they own us and those high up will take the perks and shut up because they will be passed on with old age before the harm and damage starts to show.
The new massive overhead lines are being put up and are all about getting the power to the coast for undersea cables, the deals are done at the high levels and anybody standing in the way will probablyregret it, thats my 2 credits worth

Yorgi, you have some gall don't you, reduced energy prices for people on benefits, who will pay for this?

Why of course me, and all the other taxpayers who are already struggling to pay their own sky high energy bills,

Our kids have to eat sandwiches at school, whilst the on benefits kids get a lovely school dinner free, paid for by the taxpayers, (over 50% at some schools) and the workers kids have to sit and watch the non workers kids tuck in,

Not to mention free dental treatment, I can't afford to go there regularly because through taxation, I have to pay the treatment costs for those who could work but don't, I am usually the only one in the waiting room paying,

My gripe is not against the elderly or disabled, but against the ever increasing amount of people who could go to work, but don't, give them a pedal powered generator to make their own.

why are we the most expensive country in the world when it comes to energy prices in both gas and elecric also our petrol prices. why do you think nearly all our energy companys are owned by foreign companys. i'll tell you why becase britains people are to soft we allow foreign companys to take over so they can get a bigger profit from us. and why do all companys not give reduced rates to people who are on benefits or elderly people or disabled people as well. why do prepay customers get peanalised for having pre pay meters why pay higher rates when you pay in advance they arn't all bad payers but if prices wern't so high we probably wouldn't need them.

With gas and electric going up an enormous amount again why do shops and the like still have all their lights and heaters blazing away wasting enegy 24/7 365 days per year the bill for heat going out of the door must be astronomical.

Pubs which now cater for the smoker (masses of manufacturing cost and lit up cigerette displays, but thats another story) wasting energy on patio heaters and infra-red lights to keep the smoker warm but they are happy to walk the streets without heat, come on landlords do your bit and save yourself some money.

Why do we need lit up road signs when we have headlights?
