Electricity prices getting silly

Over the past 18 months we have heard the rumours and seen press statements about Electricity prices rising, but it’s getting silly now.  Let’s go BACK TO BASICS.

Prior to privatisation under Margaret Thatcher, we all paid reasonable amounts for life sustaining products such as electricity gas and water.  But now it’s getting to the point where workers on lower salaries, the disabled, unemployed and pensioners are unable to afford these weekly or monthly bills.

My average electricity bill used to be £40

I have 3 children and my average electricity bill used to be £40 a month and up to £60 in the winter.  When using the tumble dryer more regularly that might go up a little bit more.  Now my electricity bill is around £20 a week, and that’s without using the tumble dryer!

Our family has not grown and we haven’t added a games arcade to the shed or anything else that is power hungry, yet the electricity companies seem to charge more and more for the same amount of power.

My mother and father have the same problems as do my in-laws, we are all struggling to pay our monthly bills.  Bear in mind that this is before water meters become compulsory and the addition of waste charges.  Where is this going to end?

As British citizens we should ask for our utilities to come back under OUR control, not foreign companies or share holders.  Left as it is, we are going to have a severe crisis.

I did not ask for coal fires to be replaced with all these modern heating systems, it was forced upon me by local authorities.  I used to be able to keep warm by burning a lot of my waste, which saved on landfill and heating costs; also cooking by this method when using coal burning stove was also cheaper.  They forced these mod cons on us, telling us, they would save us time and money - what TOSH!  Its costing more now than ever before, and we cannot go back now to coal burners!

And we don’t seem to have any recourse for complaints.  They put a "watchdog" in place for us to make sure we get value for money..  Well HELLO?  It’s not actually working..  I seriously see big problems facing the UK and its getting worse by the month, these companies are making millions upon millions, and we see no benefits from this unless we are shareholders..  Corporate greed has overtaken the need for other fellow human beings to survive..  Just look at the Aberfan tragedy, enough said!

The Electricity companies are now owned by European companies including State owned interests, its about getting the maximum amount of our currency out of us and thats it.
Overseas governments would stop a UK buyer from taking over their water , gas and power because its an important infrastructure, they wont even let other close European countries do it, which has been evidenced in the blocking by some countries of others in electricity deals recently.
They are going to dump their old fuel rods in the UK now because they own us and those high up will take the perks and shut up because they will be passed on with old age before the harm and damage starts to show.
The new massive overhead lines are being put up and are all about getting the power to the coast for undersea cables, the deals are done at the high levels and anybody standing in the way will probablyregret it, thats my 2 credits worth

Use plain statistics. Use real numbers. Use valuable information. Electricity prices in pounds per kilowatt hour in january: from 1996 was 0.0876 to 2007 was 0.1254.

Yorgi, you have some gall don't you, reduced energy prices for people on benefits, who will pay for this?

Why of course me, and all the other taxpayers who are already struggling to pay their own sky high energy bills,

Our kids have to eat sandwiches at school, whilst the on benefits kids get a lovely school dinner free, paid for by the taxpayers, (over 50% at some schools) and the workers kids have to sit and watch the non workers kids tuck in,

Not to mention free dental treatment, I can't afford to go there regularly because through taxation, I have to pay the treatment costs for those who could work but don't, I am usually the only one in the waiting room paying,

My gripe is not against the elderly or disabled, but against the ever increasing amount of people who could go to work, but don't, give them a pedal powered generator to make their own.

why are we the most expensive country in the world when it comes to energy prices in both gas and elecric also our petrol prices. why do you think nearly all our energy companys are owned by foreign companys. i'll tell you why becase britains people are to soft we allow foreign companys to take over so they can get a bigger profit from us. and why do all companys not give reduced rates to people who are on benefits or elderly people or disabled people as well. why do prepay customers get peanalised for having pre pay meters why pay higher rates when you pay in advance they arn't all bad payers but if prices wern't so high we probably wouldn't need them.

With gas and electric going up an enormous amount again why do shops and the like still have all their lights and heaters blazing away wasting enegy 24/7 365 days per year the bill for heat going out of the door must be astronomical.

Pubs which now cater for the smoker (masses of manufacturing cost and lit up cigerette displays, but thats another story) wasting energy on patio heaters and infra-red lights to keep the smoker warm but they are happy to walk the streets without heat, come on landlords do your bit and save yourself some money.

Why do we need lit up road signs when we have headlights?

Simon, I forgot the dryer that consumes electricity, eletric stove, name it. Where the heck is the British pound symbol?
*Sam, the tiger  30-Jan-2009 19:10

My God, Simon S! Are you for real?

My two storey brick house with 6 bedrooms, so on, so on, with an electric fireplace (plus a conventional fireplace), washing and dish-washing machines, a hot water tank running daily all year round, PCs - I can go on.

My last TWO MONTHLY (we are billed 6 times a year) Ontario hydro bill (water and light) averages C$170 (95 GBP) or roughly 1.60 GBP a day during these winter months with minus 6C through minus 24C subzero temperatures.

I find your predicament appalling and unimaginable. How do people in Britain survive? Now you got me thinking.
*Sam, the tiger  30-Jan-2009 19:02

When are the people of Britain going to wake up to the fact that they have been had? Had all round by the Government, their employers, their pension funds, the builders, estate agents, overpriced housing, immigration, falling pound, jerry-built homes, religion, I could go on and on forever.

It seems to me that your home is probably an end of terrace or standalone house on the top of a hill exposed to East and expose to the cold fronts from Russia in winter. That your house was built on the cheap by an incompetent builder: during the 1950s, 1960s or 1970s. It's got no insulation. It never had any. It's technically an uninhabitable house. It ought to be zero rated for Council tax purposes, value nothing - zilch zero. It's only fit for demolition. It's not worth anything.

Do you really think they would allow your house to be built in Scandinavia? No way Jose

Move downstairs. Buy a mobile electric storage heater. Shoot two polar beard make yourself some fur coats.

Emma M, Really, children aren't a luxury, they are a neccesity. Without them there is no point, but they are proflocate with electricity.

As for electricity costs, well yes they are getting out of control but we all waste so much. I recently baught a gadget from a well known electronics store that tells me minute by minute how much juice I'm using. I can tell you now, it opened my eyes. Just thaving chargers and low power DC power supplies for telephones, PC speaker etc plugged in and NOT with a phone/device on charge or speakers switched on was drawing constantly over 100 Watts. Thats over a Kilowatt hour per day doing nothing. Add the standby items like the TV, DVD, Video and that dreaded Settop TV box and I add another 150 watts and they are not even on yet. Add the fridge and freazer and the internet modem etc and I get a whopping base load of around 5 Killowatt hours per day. Oh and the Central heating boiler doing nothing draws a constant 14 watts. Thats all adds upto over 150 Killowatt hours per month (450 per quater) . And I am not doing any thing yet!
