Fixing a car

My gripe is with the big garages and in particular vehicle repairs and the quotes you are given where they don’t fix the problem, but charge you a ridiculous amount anyway.

Is it just me that gets annoyed when I take my car in to get a problem fixed and I get a bill for all the solutions they tried that didn’t fix the problem?  They give me an estimate of £50 which miraculously turns into a bill of £200 plus.  Why should I pay for a mechanic that doesn’t know what the problem is?

My favourite is when you get "we didn’t find the problem, but we replaced your battery, starter motor, oil filter and horn, so that’s ten grand please, and you still have that knocking noise.  Come back next Saturday when we have more time" and "oh we threw those old parts out, so you can’t take your car back until you pay."

Shouldn't we be paying the money to fix the problem, hence using an expert in the first place?  Not financing a complete trial and error process that always seems to be in the region of a few hundred pounds?

"It will cost £100 to fix your oil leak sir" after a cursory view, but then a bill for £400 comes in to cover all the other items we tried that didn’t in fact fix the leak.  Grrr…

I can state however that I have never had this problem with smaller local garages and that I understand that sometimes things do need to be looked at in stages to fix them.  But so many times I seem to have been overly stung for the lack of knowledge on the mechanics part, and I cant help but think that perhaps there is something dodgy going on at these larger garages.

I been overcharged for service, ripped off form MG and AM CENTER London Islington
They lied about service done to my car. When I picked up my car MG and AM CENTER they handed to me parts from timing belt witch parentally was serviced. I took this part to local mechanic and investigated untrue story from MG and AM CENTER.

Manager from MG and AM CENTER when I was trying to ask about service he have done to my car he start shouting on me and swear. Manager MG and AM CENTER sad to pay the bill and get out . I couldn't avoid payment of this bill - Total of £210 was paid cash.

I still keep as a proof of lie parts from timing belt and original receipt. Please advise how I can get my money back and prevent next customers from being ripped of from this company

There is another problem with rip off garages other than the norm, which motorist are not aware of, I've been expensively caught by these a few times, now I check everything: I've left my vehicle at certain garages, around the Swansea area, only to find on it's return that, certain parts to be different, that were not on their bill, they've in fact used older items, then replace perfectly good parts, oh the parts work believe me, but the part changed is obviously from a scrap dealer, some even left the scrapies paint mark on. now remember, these parts didn't need changing, nor were they part of the repairs, so people, keep an eye out, make sure you know your engine parts, even better take a photo of them, especially underneath if you can, as when was the last time you checked your vehicle. because once you take your car away, whose to say it's them. I now inform the trading standards office, about them, they think they're getting away with it, we will see, if enough people contact these offices, those named regularly, will be heavily fined, then hopefully closed down. eventually.

Here's what happened to us at a VW place in Kidlington near Oxford. We traded a car (non vw) in for another and after the agreement went to pick up our lovely new (2 yr old) car up 4 days later. We arrived to find the windscreen had been accidentally smashed (by a mechanic) that morning and they had accidentally punctured a tyre. We took it in our stride and waited an hour for them to find, deliver and fit a new tyre. After this we took our car home. The next day we had to wait all morning for a replacement windscreen to be delivered and fitted at our home.

Three days later we had all sorts of warning lights flashing. No coolant had been put in, nor brake fluid. We rang them and agreed to bring it back in but stressed we would only have an hour and a half for them to remedy any problems. Two hours later we were called to say 'Erm, sorry there are more problems. We need 4 more days to sort this out. Can we give you a courtesy car until then?' Obviously this was not the best news but told them as long as we can get the courtesy car within the hour (we had kids to pick up from school) it would be fine. Over an hour later we were still waiting. A courtesy car arrived with NO FUEL. After a rant we finally were given one of the employees cars to drive home.

We now have the dilemma of what to do. Perhaps we will try the 30 day exchange agreement for a different VW. We have lost all faith with the employees there, they were unprofessional in every aspect and do not have a clue of what they are supposed to do.

Recently I searched 24/7 spares.com to find second hand parts for a ford fiesta which would have to be scrapped otherwise. A company called HORBURY DISMANTLERS contacted us to say they had the parts with the correct code number. we paid almost £80 and were delighted. three weeks later there were still no parts, they kept blaming fed-ex and didnt seem bothered that they had sent out two lots of parts which had never arrived. they agreed to refund us but again, two weeks later we are still waiting.

Hello
they are just at it, my uncle got given a ford fiesta by a friend when he found himself without a car, it had been sitting in storage for a year and had done 70 miles from the last MOT, the guy who had it had bought it for his son, who bought a nice new car, the man didnt like it because it was too small and his wife didn't like it as it has tinted side windows and 5 spoke alloys, so it sat for a year.
A maechanic friend looked it over and said all it needed was a hoover and a wash, so he put it in for an MOT, it had new brakes, new shocks and a new oil change/filter as well as 3 brand new tyres just after the last MOT.
The garage took it in, said oh o it needs the headlights re aligned, 2 new tyres, a new radiator hose, the emissions are too high and we'll need to check the engine as well due to the emissions.
My uncle has no choice but to deal with this garage as it is the only one for 70 miles and thats that, they have done it to him with every vehicle he has had for the last 15 years and he's too polite so he will just pay up their rediculous made up charges, he's being nice and they just think he's a sucker.
The car has been in for "MOT" adjustments for 2 weeks now and when he phones them, they are "just working on getting the emissions down" come on its just a little petrol 1.2 fiesta, there are a lot worse old rattling deisel vehicles out there that they dont bother with..
Parts at such and such pounds, labour at 30 per hour times, lets see...thinks a bit...11 and a half hours...plus VAT..ahem..

:I took my ford ka to be serviced at Perrys in Clitheroe, on the (fri) one day later (saturday) I lifted the bonnet open, they did not fill any tanks up! cooling tank nearly empty, brake fuild empty, power steering tank nearly empty, so on... They did'nt even take the hand brake up, as promised! When I booked the ka in, the manager said, your car will be also valeted inside and out, when I picked the car up, 3 hours later, they never valeted it!

So on the day after (saturday) I rung up Perrys manager, he said he would ring me back, but he never did! So the oil & filter change cost me, £85!

just took mine into the garage for a new clutch cable which they apparently didn't replace when they replaced the clutch last month, the breakdown guy told me it would cost around £20 for a cable and was a quick job but the garage had the car for a week and charged me £160 to replace the cable.

Mechanics all have a price book for what to charge and how long it should take for each job.For example a water pump on a 1987 Chevy truck would be 2 hours to install and the cost of the part. Now if mechanics want the professional title, then they must use a professional time limit for every job.Outside of this is shop supplies which should be reasonable and fair. There is a time limit on every job and make them pull out this book and go over it with you. Then if they want to take their time, thats there loss. You have agreed to the labor costs already and the part costs, this book is guide line to how much they can charge and how long it can take as a professional mechanic.Anyone who disagrees with this is not the mechanic you want to be putting your faith or trust in.Walk out the front door and try another mechanic who will do this for you. This can save a lot of time, aggravation and of course our hard earned money.Professional mechanics have a time limit for every job and know the costs very well.

I live in Canada, the average even in a small garage is 60-110 per hour. Now that is bad enough, only to get bill and have the same problems as before still present and unfixed.I took my tuck to Vintage Automotive in Calgary,Alberta for an oil leak and a brake problem cost me 200.00 to have him tighten 8 bolts and then charges me 110.00 for test driving my truck to tell me what I had told him when I brought it in,I need a proportioning valve, did I get one No of course not.Today I fixed and found all my problems, the oil leak was coming from the oil sensor line, not the tappet covers that he fixed,as I fixed those today and see they have not been touched in years.I will pay a lot more than 110 per hour if you can show me a true caring professional who does the best he can for me.Mechanics are the same as dentists and lawyers and see a way to profit and do the least possible to really do a good job.So thanks Fred Armstrong at Vintage Auto for ripping me off and making me do your job.Today I spent 3Hrs and found and fixed all that was wrong and I did it correctly and cheaply only 212.00 for all the parts.I thought the garage could do it faster as I am on a strict time limit.Wrong they do the poorest work possible and cut corners when ever they can, what about safety and protecting fellow motorists.
