Front fog lights

In this country, I can count on one hand, the number of times I have driven in fog that required fog lights in the LAST TEN YEARS.  And, on a motorway, I was doing 20mph because I could not SEE far enough to go any faster.  The vehicles I could see in front of me (less than 40 yards away) with their fog lights on were a blur, just visible.  On the rare occasions that this happened, it was some of the most frightening times I have ever spent behind a steering wheel!

A car with front fog lights

People think that they look "cool"

Now, rear fogs lights you don't see as often these days; still there's the odd one or two idiots who have forgotten that they have them, like blinding people, or maybe they just don't care... but the FRONT fogs lights have REALLY kicked off. People think they look "cool".

Let me tell you, they don't look anything except BRIGHT and they actually make YOU look really STUPID!

A lot of the time, they're misaligned, so that they shine up higher than they should and that makes them appear even brighter.  They should illuminate the road out to the sides of the car and about 20 yards ahead.  They don't have beam shaping like headlamps do, meaning that they aren't dipped to the right and high on the left.

They are NOT an adequate substitute for properly adjusted, properly used headlamps.  So WHY do people use them the way they do?  In fact, I don't want to know why - I want you to turn them off.  Now.  Or I'll smash them!

Driving with fogs on without due cause is illegal. I know several coppers who make a point of pulling over cars when they see it because they can virtually guarantee it's not the only offence being committed (half the time they find the drivers are unlicensed or the cars are uninsured)

Front fog lights - hmm. The clue is in the name, they should only be used in fog, heavy rain or falling snow and the same laws apply to the rear ones too! Most of the numpties that are driving round with front fogs and side lights are actually using driving lamps (intended to supplement your MAIN BEAM and operate ONLY WITH MAIN BEAM!) mounted below the bumper. This will cause glare and dazzling to other drivers, unlike proper fog lights where the lens or reflector acts to disperse the light to a very wide but short beam pattern, mounted at a height to get under the weather to light up obstructions and the kerb so you can see where you are going!!
As an aside, why do people who nothing about lights in general refer to any type of auxiliary lamp as a spot lamp????? Spot lamps are a form of driving lamp (see above) that can be used in addition to driving lamps (but wired the same way, often with an extra switch to turn them off if not needed) to pick out things in the far distance and have a long, thin "pencil" beam. Driving lamps as already stated are to supplement the main beam and as such have a beam that is long and not very wide to pick things out at mid-far distance. Fog lamps have a wide but short beam to pick out things like the kerb (always useful in the fog!) and also have a sharp cut-off to the beam pattern to PREVENT DAZZLE!!! Without this, the light would simply reflect back off the fog, totally negating any benefit from using them at all!!
Now if there's any member of Her Majestys Constabulary reading this, would you kindly educate the chavs and numpties that use fog lights as a fashion accessory by giving them a FPN for using lights other than in accordance with the conditions please?!
Granted there are times when it is benefical to drive on sidelights with foglights - usually when the fog is so thick the dipped beam is reflecting back off it but the foglights can get under it! That should be the only time it is allowed though!

Hauler, this site is called The Weekly Gripe.

There should have been a little clue there.

Moaning may not be the oldest profession but it is probably the oldest hobby:

"Who do them people in that big cave think they are? Snobs!"

"Mastodon steak again?

A. Anon >>>

Yes, everybody has a right to moan... and no, that is not what I meant...
You have a right to moan, just as long as you don't expect anything to be done about it, anybody else to give two flying hoots what you think, or want to be done, or force us to sit here, and listen to your insencible whinging about it...

I meant, what I said... that I have had enough of people moaning about anything, and everything....
You might as well moan about the sky being Blue (occasionally) and the Sea being Wet (if you can see it, past all of the Raw Sewerage...)

... It is one of those things, that you cannot do anything about, so why waste your breath, your time, along with other peoples, moaning about things you cannot change... just use come common scence, and shut up about things you cannot change.
*Hauler  18-Jul-2010 20:13

Hauler "I am tired to the back teeth of people moaning about insignificant, and trivial things such as......." - other people moaning for example? You can moan but other people can't?

Stonelaughter >>>

Oh, for christ sake, shut up, you apparently demented old fart !!!

Have you nothing better to do, than moan about people?

If you don't like it when people come towards you with their front fogs on, turn on your main beams at them... I always do... they normally turn them off, atleast until they are past you, because they have probably forgotten that they have them on...

... or just bear with it, for the few seconds that they are visable, before they pass you...

... the only way you could have a problem, is if you suffer from "Rabbit-in-the-Headlight" syndrome...
which means that you seem to be purposly drawn to their headlights, and stare into them until they pass you.... if this is the case, more the fool you.... YOU are the one who is the dangerous one in this situation...

You moan about people and their foglights... I am tired to the back teeth of people moaning about insignificant, and trivial things such as this... it is THEIR licence, and THEIR choice...
so, basically, put up, or shut up.....preferebly both !!!!

It has to be the "nit pick" principle for this gripe I guess?

No front fogs I've encountered have dazzled me, yet I hear everyone moaning about them on here and sometimes from the odd work friend too.

I'm more bothered about actual problems from idiots with full beam or the new "upgrade" 4000 - 12,000k HID headlights that act as a brighter main beam when on dipped, than to moan about jo/e bloggs with some underpowered fog lights on.

Besides, visibility is important nowadays and it's just that people are taking it too far with both hate for fog light users and hate for moaning "correct driver" drivel.

Most front fog bleeders have to actively turn on the 'cool front fog lights' each and every time they turn on the lights. I totally agree with the original poster. Why they think they are cool is way beyond my levels of comprehension. I'm far more accepting of the fact that sometimes people inadvertantly leave the rear fogs on when they shouldn't be. What is more worrying is that most of the people simply don't understand how to operate their vehicle. A simple double on-off of your rear fog light is surely enough to indicate to the errant driver that they've left it on by mistake. You'll be met with either a thankful flash of the hazards (from drivers aware of their surroundings) or more worryingly, no response at all from the people who don't have a clue.

More roads police I say...

oh come is this all you have to moan about seriously?
oh no front fog lights are so bright try the nobs who take 3 years to turn their normal high beam down. by the time they get to your vehicle they finally find the swith.
not only that I live out in the country side so on our crap little roads these are useful. but all people have to do is turn them off when they see another car. its what I do.

I quite agree with 'stonelaughter', I'll bet most of the idiots who use fog lights in clear conditions are not spectacle wearers! . They cause light defraction which is deadly to anyone wearing glasses. It's even worse if they are behind you. Do they realise we see TWELVE bright lights in our mirrors ! ? I have been forced to brake violently to avoid collision with an oncoming idiot due to dazzle.

Sorry guys, I know this was getting juicy, but was n't all this about to55er5 and their fog lights?
I'm just hoping for better weather in the good old U.K. so that when it gets foggy over here I don't have to drive behind to55er5 with their rear fog lights on for the next five days, let alone the front fog light to55er5 that don't know why there is an extra warning light showing on the dashboard!

Goodbye and good riddance Patti!

Did it begin to penetrate your tiny mind that you may have been wrong in accusing me of lying? Embarrassing isn't it?
