At almost every restaurant, one thing you can expect is for the waitress to ask if you want a smoking or non-smoking table.  It's an elementary question, but it is one that shouldn't need to be asked.  This simple question may seem normal, but smoking in public places is a health and safety hazard and should not be allowed.

A cigarette butt, the US should ban smoking too

Smoking is an extremely unhealthy habit.  Burning just one cigarette releases over 4,000 chemicals into the air.  This smoke can trigger some asthma attacks, and who would like 4,000 pollutants clogging their lungs?

Spending one hour with a smoker is the equivalent of smoking four cigarettes.  This recycled smoking, or second hand smoke, can endanger the health of others, especially those that are very old or very young.  If every public place allowed smoking, that would be like smoking wherever you go.

There are no laws about smoking while driving, but it is a hazard that should be looked into. Cigarette smoke contains a chemical called carbon monoxide, which, when taken in excess, can cause the smoker to feel dizzy and off balance.  How can this be called safe driving?  Many smokers, when smoking in a car, will throw cigarette butts out the window instead of waiting and throwing them away.  This is nothing short of being a litterbug.

Smoking is a danger to the environment.  Cigarette smoke pollutes the air, and adds to our acid rain problem.  Cigarette filters are non-biodegradable, which means they will not decompose. These filters could be choked on by animals and small children, and no one wants to clean up after those who don't clean up after themselves.

Some countries have banned smoking in public places, but America has yet to follow suit.  Even some of the most family oriented restaurants allow smoking.  The people eating at these restaurants could include babies, senior citizens, people with asthma, and those who in general would prefer not to be around smoke.  If they were really family restaurants, smoking would not be allowed.

Some smokers may feel they have the right to smoke, but non-smokers also have the right to be disgusted with the rude, ignorant, sloppy, and inconsiderate people who smoke.

Im not a smoker, but to catagorize all people that do smoke to be sloppy and inconsiderate and all that other stuff isn't fair. Not all smokers are like that.

Criminal Justice Major

We've had this arguement in the United Kingdom, But what about the rights of non smokers in both America and England to be able to go where thy want without having to breath in exhaled smoke and to have the smell of tobbaco clinging to our clothes.Rights work in both direction not just for smokers.

ban smoking in public places!!! end of story. get cancer on your own time and don't share. if I wanted to die an early death as a wrinkley, skin spotted, hacking up shards of my lung 40 yr old- I would support public smoking- but somehow it just doesnt sound so appealing. thanks anyway

What you ex-smokers and non-smokers don't realize is that when you vote to take away smoking in all public places you are also taking away from your fellow citizens rights. This country is supposed to be a free country and you who think you are better than us smokers decide how we should live basically. I do believe that smoking should not be in restaraunts, but I also believe that an establishment, such as a bar, should have the RIGHT to choose whether they are a smoking or non-smoking facility. and if you non-smokers don't think that it should be like that than I want you to ask yourself why. If you are taking your children to a bar you really need to rethink what you are saying about smoking being banned in all public places. if you still don't see it the way I do than you are a hypocrit and not even worth arguing with because you seem to think that you are always right. you do have to remeber though that I am sure your ancestors came over to this country because it is or I mean was a FREE country. they wanted thier families to live better lives and now you are taking freedom from others. a bit of a contradiction don't you think?

I am so poor I cannot afford cigarettes at all, or drink. I cannot afford to leave tips after having dinners out.

This country has made me poor. I walk everywhere, never taking buses or trains. I buy all my clothes from the thrift shops. The few pennies that I have left over at the end of the day I put in a pot for mu old age, as I don't have a pension. I don't own my own house. I never travel abroad.

No one wants to employ the skills that I have. I refuse to work in unethical businesses.

Oh my POOR little Anon,
You see I live in America and am free, not your twisted government help me free, I am truly free and I can say honestly that if I was a ex-smoker I would feel the same way. You are not in danger of me smoking if you do not like me smoking get away from me. Simple Anon even you can understand that (if not I am sure it wont be long before a government agency tells you what I said.) Grow up take care of your self and quit having the government do every thing for you. And lastly my poor misguided government dependent friend. If I choose to quit smoking it will be my choice and I will buy the patches myself not take a government hand-out as you did. When are you going to take care of your self and stop letting the government do it for you? It may be to late!

Oh by the way at 15 I was at school studying for my gce.s and I didn't start smoking or drinking untill I was 19 .Incidentally I regret ever starting smoking and I would have thought that to smoke and quit is a good thing. You seem to deride it, I wonder why? what happened to you to make you that bitter against ex smokers or perhaps you're a little jelouse because you're unable to quit.

Could be because I have a thirteen and afifteen year old son and picked that age as an exhample. Also I teach 11 to 16 year olds in school and try and impress on them that they accept the rule of law and to respect their bodies without pumping alcohol and nicotine into them. You don't seem to have that kind of morality.
Yes I do have the democratic right to vote for my government and as such accept any rulings that they make democratically.Laws are not just there to be broken but to protect the majority of the public, something we allow our democratically ellected M.P.s to make decisions about not just back out when we dont like the answers.
