Listening to the radio on the way home from work recently, I heard a song played that at first I thought was just a bit stupid, but later decided that I actually found the lyrics somewhat offensive. I’m referring to that Black Eyed Peas song “My Hump”.

Well one thing is extremely obvious is that things have definitely changed as far as what is allowed and what isn’t allowed to be played on the radio these days.  I remember some years ago that song “Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood was banned because it was deemed to be too risky for public consumption.  What’s this all about then?

Don’t get me wrong, Black Eyed Peas aren’t the only ‘band’ out there, that are in my opinion, pushing the boundaries as far as decency goes.  It’s gradually becoming more common to have some rude lyrics in a song and to me that is perhaps a little sad.  I am not prudish or stuffy, but I think that the boundaries of good taste are crossed all too often these days.

I mix your milk wit my cocoa puff, milky, milky cocoa...

By referring to such things as “my hump” and “my lovely lady lumps”, we know exactly what they are talking about don’t we?  And one just has to Google a few of the choice phrases such as “mix your milk wit my cocoa puff” to get some idea what the song is about!  Of course it’s about sex and certain parts of the female anatomy.

There’s nothing wrong with a bit of raunchiness and a few sexual innuendos in a song, but it has to be done tastefully.  I think that what the Black Eyed Peas have done just sounds crass or at the very least tacky, and the street language used in the song does very little to camouflage the gratuitous vulgarity.

You can look at it another way and say that it’s quite innocent because it does actually come across as being quite childish.  However, I don’t think this kind of song is suitable for young and impressionable kids.  We could really do with them teaching to respect themselves and other people, and that’s not what this song is about.

Black Eyed Peas, My Humps

Song Lyrics - Black Eyed Peas

I came accross this site which provides a fairly literal translation to the song. Have a look and make up your own mind about 'My Humps':   Slang City - Black Eyed Peas

I can't stand people that have never heard of a band before and/or have actually bashed a band before then this band comes out with a song everyone loves and suddenly they love the band! Now I don't care how someone finds a band they like, but if your goingto claim that you like it, listen to more than just that one song! But whoevers going to yell "I'm just saying!"

Nothing compared to "I'll take you to the candyshop/I'll let you lick the lollipop"....

It's a much obvious cliche, but more so these days, that "anything goes" - the only advice that if you find a song offensive, why not either lodge an official complaint or just turn the radio down or off.

At the end of the day, quite plainly, music is music!!

First off, who's to decide what is tasteful? I'm sure that your definition of tasteful is completely different than mine.
Second, young kids are GOING to hear these songs one way or another, whether through friends, older siblings, etc. I think it would be better to let the kids listen to the songs, and then explain to them what they mean, and then, by whatever ethics you base your family off of, teach them accordingly how you feel about the songs.
If you just try to eliminate certain words in a song to make it more "tasteful", you will in turn end up creating a bland piece of music with no taste at all.
Don't limit the musician just because you yourself don't like their lyrics. Millions of others will surely like those same lyrics you might find 'untasteful'.

Lets face it, regardless of the Lyrics, almost ALL music released in the past 10 or 15 years has been absolute rubbish, churned out by talentless morons, and flogged by money grabbing record producers who don't give a flying Fart about the content as long as it sells.
Radio stations, and DJs are as much to blame for playing and promoting this Cr*p.
I have a broad musical taste, from Classical to Heavy Metal, but my taste does not extend to the stuff on sale in recent years.

I feel that artists have a right to say what they feel and want, and it's ok because if someone is offended, they can also express their right to be objectionable. Also, they can express their right to not support that band or artist by not purchasing the CD.

It's not a case of people being a stick in the mud, it's the case that it's a huge gimmick.

Er, I've just replied to the wrong thread. At least it wasn't the one about dodgy garages I was reading earlier. I'll get my coat shall I?

I honestly haven't listened to daytime radio since my teens,( I'm now 36), I find most chart music to not be to my taste. I spent a short time about four years ago in another office where the radio was on all day. I didn't know how these people managed to stay sane with the same songs on over and over again. Robbie Williams, Nickelback(whose song I grew to loathe, from merely just disliking), identikit American angry teen bands. The songs began to dominate my thoughts, my hatred for them grew until it honestly started affecting my concentration and my work began to suffer. Thankfully I was out of there after two weeks and back to the relative tranquillity of my normal office, which can be bedlam at times but give me that anyday.

I'm a bit of a music snob, I'll admit it. I hate listening to bad music. It annoys me that Eminem is a household name yet how many people have heard of Grant McLennan or Joe Pernice or Brendan Benson? There's so much great music out there that never gets a look in on daytime radio, either on Radio 1 or smaller, local stations and it's always been that way as far as I can remember. Delve a bit deeper would be my advice, read a few music mags especially the January issues when they usually collate the years best music and you realise you haven't heard of most of them, try them out on myspace, lastfm, you tube, etc and put your own comps together and listen to that on your drive to work- radio sucks!
