Too many adverts on TV and radio

I don’t have a TV and there is a very good reason for that.  Apart from the mindless dribble that one has to endure and the prohibitive cost of the television license, there appears to be an endless stream of adverts to contend with these days!  I understand that television programming has to be paid for somehow, but must we endure nearly half a dozen advert sequences in every TV show.

Car radio, too many adverts on the radio

I happened to spend some time watching television over the Christmas holidays.  One show that we watched was called CSI (crime scene investigation) or something along those lines.  Anyway, the programme was only about three quarters of an hour in length and just as I was getting into it, there would be YET ANOTHER commercial break.

It’s extremely irritating, especially as it’s the same adverts again and again!  Why do we have to have a commercial break every ten minutes?  Surely just once or twice would have been enough.  TV commercials are okay in small doses, but it’s really something else when the adverts are almost as long as the show itself!

Adverts on the radio really grate on my nerves as well.  I often listen to the local stations for traffic reports and a bit of music on the way to work in the morning.  Unfortunately, you have to put up with these stupid jingles and adverts that seem to be even more frequent than TV ads! around.

Also, there seems to be a lot less variety with the radio adverts; it’s the same one again and again.  I have heard this particular Freelander Disovery advert so many times that I can almost recite it word for word!  Add to this the complete tripe that some of the morning DJ’s spout out, it’s really no wonder than a lot of people switch off and play a CD instead.

Lets face it TV isn't going to change, if it does it won't be in the viewers favour. I don't really watch TV or listen to radio for many reasons now from the bird brained broadcasts to the appauling number of adverts (the list is actually endless). On occasion i am seduced by programmes on yesterday and quest but soon lose interest upon being plagued by loud neanderthals parading thier spoils.
It is a reflection on the british public that we allow it, there are more willing to watch than there are to stand against, but remember this is big business the only way we can declare war on adverts is if they by some miracle contravene the human rights act.

Dear Stalag 14. Immense point raised, I totally agree. It's not as if we can cancel our subscriptions because there Terrestrial Channels. Even if this did apply to Sky and the like, the only way it would happen if people in their millions immediately cancelled there subscriptions and protested.

Can't see it happening though.

Advertisers are greedy whores - 17-Nov-11 10:30

:I am extremely upset with too many commercials on TV. When the advert appears, I have many options, such as bathroom, eat, mute, change channels, record and fast forward the commercials, or turn off TV. This increase of commercials on all channels is making my life very uneasy and perhaps will discontinue TV all together. Example, One channel, one hour long, had 38 minutes of programming and 22 minutes of commercials, and I am paying for this on cable TV. Keep it up, and Satellite and Cable will lose more and more customers. I receive once a week at least to resign up disc or direct TV. They must be hurting for more business to due the economy. Thank you,

Twelve minutes of advertising on the telly.
“The increase from the current maximum of seven minutes per hour comes into play on Monday and applies to ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. The new rules will be introduced for a year-long trial period but could be made permanent if audiences do not object.”
23-feb-2011, National paper

Freeview has always allowed twelve minutes per hour.

Note the phrase, “If audiences do not object.”

Question, how do I object to the amount of adverts??????????
Who do I email or write to?
Will they take any notice unless millions object, or will they just ignore us?

As has been said before on here, I am totally fed up with the ridiculous amount of adverts on TV and radio. It's almost impossible to get into any program or film these days because they are ruined by the same boring and some what annoying adverts every 10 mins or so. Now, I book films out on pay per view just to be sure of advert free viewing. Plus, I record all my tv programs so I can fast forward the adverts and even that takes time at 30 times the speed!!! As if that wasn't enough, we now have to put up with adverts on our DVDs. Having said all that, the real absolute molten pearl of a pain in the rear, is nearly half an hour of the dam things we have to endure after paying a small fortune to see a movie at the cinema. Why has been allowed to happen?

Subscription tv should be advert free, but it isn't, because they are greedy ...tards.
Another thing, Freeview channels have had the amount of advertising they can show per hour increased!
Try watching anything on Freeview, its a nightmare of adverts

I am fed up with the amount of time that TV lets ads use. I hate that my movie on Dish which I pay a lot a month for the service and most of the channels are overwhelmed in ad time and content. This practice had better change or I will terminate my subscription to Dish and all TV and do without. I can get it all free on the net anyway or for a lot less money. I did a term paper back in 1967 on the idea of pay television and what a great idea it was as it would eliminate commercial TV because customers would pay a fee for the service and ads would be unnecessary. Nobody then in their wildest dreams would of thought that 30 or more years later that we would be paying for TV and still have the ad content and time on TV. I am fed up and will in the near future stop using TV if this trend does not stop or cut back soon. Thankyou

I binned my TV today - it's gone forever. I certainly aren't going to 'upgrade' to digital for more of the, generally poor, TV shows severely infected with adverts. Like the previous post, I haven't watched or listened to an advert for years because I record all of my viewing in advance and then fast forward through the adds. However, the selection of programmes that I would like to watch has so diminished that I'm now faced with watching 'live' because I have nothing recorded. That's the end, I've gone back to reading..

For years I've been hitting the mute button during adverts because I really hate being shouted at. I haven't actually heard an advert for perhaps ten years or more. But you are right, the sheer amount of adverts has now crossed a line and in things like crime thrillers I can no longer follow the plot because of the adverts. So in the past year or so I have completely given up watching commercial channels live. I now record programs I want to watch and watch them later, fast forwarding the adverts. On a two hour program it also saves about half an hour of valuable time.

Although commercials are annoying they make lots of money for the TV company to enable them to buy the films you are watching. They are put out at the optimum time at points of interest when most people are watching. When I was involved in advertising they got 1,000 people to have spy cameras fitted to their TVs to see what they did when commercials come on. The results ranged from switching channels, making a cup of tea, looking at a newspaper or magazine and even making love, but despite this around 15% of people actually watch them so for evey million viewers 150,000 watch the ads. If only 10% of those are influenced then it's 15,000 sales per showing. That;'s why ads are usually meant to be funny so as to catch your attention. They cost around £7,000 per second ($14,000) to show and usually last no more than 30 seconds.

I think in this country we are too tolerant, of the large numbers of commercials that are shown on commercial channels. There are some channels that show a commercial every 10 minutes. If you sit down to enjoy a programme on the TV you would not be very happy if a knock came at the door every 10 minutes with someone trying to sell you some thing. I think that on average a person could be wasting around two-and-a-half-hour a night with commercial breaks. I start to watch a programme like C S I crime scene investigation and I am very interested in the story. Halfway through I have seen so many commercials that I start to doze off and lose interest in the programme. It can be the same set of commercials in each break. With a lot of the commercial channels, they have their volume much louder than the programme so I am always having to turn down the sound on the TV. Then if I doze off a bit I do not notice when the programme returns. I think advertisers should bear this in mind if you turn down the sound on your TV you are missing the commercials as well as the programme, so what is the point of doing it.

Radio is also bad for commercials the same commercial over and over again and some of them are extremely bad and annoying to.

The networks are losing a lot of viewers, and apart from the poor quality of programming these days, the commercials have been getting louder, longer and more frequent than ever before. I realize they need to make money to pay for their programming, but they could trying something new for a change....maybe shortening the commercials, making them more entertaining, and having the commercials run in between programing instead of constantly interrupting each program. It's long been known that viewers mute them, and many lose interest in the programs they are watching due to the lengthy and frequent interruptions.

As daft as it sounds I feel a lot better for posting a gripe about excessive Tv advertising, I thought I was on my own, it is comforting to realise that there are others, maybe a Net wise person could organise an on line petition, to measure the actual depth of hostile feelings against those company Nerds who are responsible

Do the compers of TV shows now have the ability to start the adverts just at that time when the suspence has built up, thus ensuring you will not channel flick?

As long as people continue to be willing consumers, then why would they have any reason to change? The only way to retaliate is to stop watching. An organized, weeklong strike might get their attention. You have to hit them where it hurts and for them it's viewership which equals money.

To understand TV, the main programs are now addverts. What you see after that dose not create
revenue for the company, therefor the viewer dose not enter the aquasion. We now see bits
a film or somethig slotted inbetween the adds. It is no longer entertainment its buisiness.
