Am I the only person to be nauseated by all the fuss the media made over George Best's demise?  The media have been going mad recently and I for one can't understand it.

I'm sorry that he died the way he did, but I must really question the excessive (in my opinion) amount of airtime devoted to him on television, the silences at Football matches and the processional funeral in Belfast?

Well I just can't figure out how the media works.  He was, admittedly an extremely talented footballer, but that was some 30 odd years ago and to be honest unless they're a serious football geek, people may only remember the drinking and the playboy lifestyle rather than the goals scored.

George Best, talented footballed - Media exposure

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, because other sporting celebrities I could mention and celebrity socialites are now the new 'Royalty' in the UK.  Since the days after Princess Diana's death we seem to treat death in a far more mawkish manner than ever before.

So please, can the media please reign in its frenzied public grieving and concentrate on some of the real life issues."

The media will concentrate on some of the least important issues. All respect to George, it's not his fault our press are misguided.

Respect is earnt, George was far and away one of the best footballers in his era. He chose to step away at the top, and from then his life went downwards.
He abused the Donor system, and in the end died from his alcoholism.
Great footballer yes no doubt respect no I am sorry I cant respect someone with a lifestyle that he had and lost.
I respect Joe Davies, Puskas, Pele, Beckenbaur,Beckham, Nicholson , Coe Ovett, and many others, Daley, Greavsie,

He was an absolute footballing legend. So what if he liked his drink and cars and beautiful woman he was the greatest player who ever lived I saw him play and every time he got the ball the crowd was silenced in expectation of what magical thing is he going to do now. Legend!!

how can you all say this he was and always will be a legend end of and to cap it all off he died as an aldoholic cool

I never knew who he was until news started coming out that he was an alcoholic bout to receive a transplant.

He wasted it as any transplanted organ only lasts about 10 years as it eventually gets rejected by the body, even though you are taking anti rejection drugs, its just the way it works

So think about how you treat your body before you end up needing some help.

Paddy you say "Its easy to see twats like joe, never saw him play". Wrong! I did see him play and I agree that he was, in his era, a brilliant player. He reached fame too soon in his young life and couldn't handle it. However, off the field he abused his body and his wife for MANY years.
He refused to give up alcohol even though he had many opportunities to do so. He "stole" a liver from a more deserving person and he finished up a self confessed loser!
You may choose to continue to wear "Rose tinted" glasses but get real!

gosh, I just read your post and find it hard to believe that someone can feel that way.
George Best was an alcoholic not a drinker, he was an addict. Death is a terrible thing in any circumstance, his family will still be bereaved.

Its easy to see twats like joe, never saw him play.By the way some of your idiotic contributors, cannot even spell loser, morons.
*paddy  20-Aug-2006 02:57

Alcoholism is an illness and not everyone can fight it. George evidently couldn't so stop slinging your poison at the greatest soccer idol we've ever had.
*Scot  18-May-2006 15:35

If you really must spew your unsolicited vitriol about the greatest guy to ever grace English soccer, are any of you lot alcoholics? I'm not either - so I can't imagine what it's like to actually be one. So show a bit of respect!
*Scot  16-May-2006 13:47

It was a pity that he died but the people who WOULD watch telly specials on Best were probably the kinds of people who didn't even know who he was, let alone in his own day.

I agree that the media builds deaths up. Just like what happened with Diana. The media and Elton John were the 2 biggest contributors to the Dead Di Hysteria.
*Mashayla  10-Apr-2006 20:08

George Best spend 10 years of his life as a wonderful footballer. The next 30 years he was a drunken, wife beating, abusive, degrading slob!. He "stole" a liver transplant from a far more deserving case, and I hope that he died feeling ashamed about that!
He had his era - but in this day and age he would never keep up with the young brilliant players we have in many Premiership Football teams!
His tribute was a farce!
