It's a shame how the media put so much pressure on celebrities.

The media will concentrate on some of the least important issues. All respect to George, it's not his fault our press are misguided.

Respect is earnt, George was far and away one of the best footballers in his era. He chose to step away at the top, and from then his life went downwards.
He abused the Donor system, and in the end died from his alcoholism.
Great footballer yes no doubt respect no I am sorry I cant respect someone with a lifestyle that he had and lost.
I respect Joe Davies, Puskas, Pele, Beckenbaur,Beckham, Nicholson , Coe Ovett, and many others, Daley, Greavsie,

He was an absolute footballing legend. So what if he liked his drink and cars and beautiful woman he was the greatest player who ever lived I saw him play and every time he got the ball the crowd was silenced in expectation of what magical thing is he going to do now. Legend!!

I never knew who he was until news started coming out that he was an alcoholic bout to receive a transplant.

He wasted it as any transplanted organ only lasts about 10 years as it eventually gets rejected by the body, even though you are taking anti rejection drugs, its just the way it works

So think about how you treat your body before you end up needing some help.

gosh, I just read your post and find it hard to believe that someone can feel that way.
George Best was an alcoholic not a drinker, he was an addict. Death is a terrible thing in any circumstance, his family will still be bereaved.

Alcoholism is an illness and not everyone can fight it. George evidently couldn't so stop slinging your poison at the greatest soccer idol we've ever had.

If you really must spew your unsolicited vitriol about the greatest guy to ever grace English soccer, are any of you lot alcoholics? I'm not either - so I can't imagine what it's like to actually be one. So show a bit of respect!

It was a pity that he died but the people who WOULD watch telly specials on Best were probably the kinds of people who didn't even know who he was, let alone in his own day.

I agree that the media builds deaths up. Just like what happened with Diana. The media and Elton John were the 2 biggest contributors to the Dead Di Hysteria.

George Best spend 10 years of his life as a wonderful footballer. The next 30 years he was a drunken, wife beating, abusive, degrading slob!. He "stole" a liver transplant from a far more deserving case, and I hope that he died feeling ashamed about that!
He had his era - but in this day and age he would never keep up with the young brilliant players we have in many Premiership Football teams!
His tribute was a farce!

Appreciate that he might have been a good footballer and all that. Yes sure, when someone dies it is tragic. You will always get a load of media fuss for some people though.

Richard Burns did not have the same kind of media spotlight when he sadly passed away due to cancer,Top Gear was the only media program to even mention his death, that I know of,best's death was self inflicted,Burn's death was not.

Many of us feel the same but the real culprit are the media. TV and newspapers have to find a new 'bandwagon' every day. They are the ones that treat us like idiots and actually create the mass hysteria.

Whether or not anyone here knows about addiction, they are still entitled to their opinion. I work with addicts , many of whom are on waiting lists for transplants and most of them have made no efforts at all to clean their act up prior to surgery, have lied throughout the assessment periods and then have major complications, rejection or die after the op is done. The rules around transplantation for addicts should be tighter. Gearge Best - before my time- I just remember him for beating people up and drink driving.

Football, football, football. I'm sorry but sporting people have all the opportunities and they just squander them. The whole liver transplant thing makes me sick.

Did this idiot have the transplant on the NHS because, if so, I think it is scandalous that, as reported in today's Telegraph, Neville Duke has had to sell his medals and flying memorabilia to pay for his wife's hip replacement. Where are our priorities
