It’s the same old story on the radio and at the local nightspot.  "Text us your requests" or "please keep the requests coming in and we’ll play your favourite song for you".  They never do, especially if you request rock or heavy metal.

The DJ that never plays your request

If you just happen to like rock or heavy metal, you’re highly unlikely to get your song played though.  Unless you choose mainstream pop music or a song that the DJ likes anyway your request will get ignored.  A classic example of this recently happened when I was listening to my local radio station.  Right at the start of their two-hour evening show I sent a text requesting that they play Forever Free by WASP.  It’s quite an old track, a little heavy in places but quite acceptable for the radio I would have thought.  Anyway, in between every song they played they still pleaded with the listeners to send in more requests.  I never heard my song in amongst all the commercial drivel that they played.

You get exactly the same in nightclubs and pubs that have a DJ spot at the weekend.  If you’re lucky they will play a ‘mini rock session’ which usually consists of Bryan Adams and The Summer of ’69, some Queen, The Darkness and maybe some Guns ‘N’ Roses.  In other words those rare examples of ‘soft publicly acceptable’ rock songs that get played to death on Radio One and in some cases make it into the charts.

It’s all utter garbage and anyone that listens to the radio in this country just gets brainwashed with mindless drivel.  It’s bad enough having to listen to their poor sense of humour and pointless chatter about celebrities and soaps in between tracks, but when the play list is as boring and predictable as it is, you might as well just switch off.

No wonder fans of real music are starting to tune into Internet radio and to stations across the pond.  In the US there are some really good rock and classic rock radio stations that put broadcasters in this country to shame.

My advice, send your DJ a request.  Request politely that he or she broadens their taste in music a little and maybe slips in the odd decent rock song.

Tom is right, the DJ does not have a say what he plays on air. It's a tight schedule to run by and if by any chance there may be a few mins to spare, he may get to play a request.

A friend of mine used to help out BFBS in Kosovo, he had his own radio slot. Could he play any requests? Not a chance.

Local radio is the worst for this, I think they probably don't have as many cd's to play as some people (me included) have in their record & cd collection! Our station say they play more music variety. More than what?
I think there is a gap in the market for a radio station that plays rock music aimed at the people who grew up with it. I thought Virgin Radio was going to be just that but it was a sad disappointment as they only had a very limited playlist. Eventually I got fed up with "Brown Eyed Girl", Lola" & "Oliver's Army"! I'm sure anyone else who listened will remember!

Hey all tune your radio to a good talk show station and put a CD in your machine when you want to rock or what ever you want to hear. Besides if you haven’t noticed...when ever you listen to request hour it's always full of requests they all ready play during non request time...have fun and stop sweating the small stuff Cheers!

Okay Tom, fair cop; I was a bit annoyed and let my temper get away with me for a bit so sorry for that.

"If you're a DJ on a pop station" : That's my point really, because they are practically ALL pop stations here in the UK and because radio DJ's can't or wont play anything else. Yes it's true there are one or two other stations, but they are in the serious minority and can't be picked up everywhere.

RealRocker - 'let not your opinions cloud your judgement'. Your reply to Ortega was sensible, and I agreed. But then what went wrong? You were doing so well. How exactly do I not know what I'm talking about? My comments were in respect of people who get all upset when they request a song and it doesn't get played, usually because it doesn't fit the station. If you're a DJ on a pop station and someone requests some heavy metal, it won't get played. That's just the way it is, it's not the DJs fault.

Ortega - because not everyone wants to listen to mainstream garbage! Just because it's new or alegedly "hot" - it doesn't make it actually good. We all know you only play what you are told to do, after all it's just a job isn't it? You don't have to love music to be a DJ, you just now how to bend your body at right angles and do what the record companies tell you to!

Tom - shove off, no one's listening to you (because we're not forced to listen to you!) and you have no idea what you're talking about anyway!

What a load of ignorant, self-righteous rubbish. Find out why radio presenters HAVE TO play a certain type of song before you slag them off. Every station has a licence - that's what determines the sort of music you can play. And DJs don't pick the songs, management do, for the above reason. And finally, nobody is FORCED to listen to it. If you don't like it, turn it off, but stop making out that you are being forced to listen to it.

I am aware I put heavy metak instead of heavy metal. apologies

I totally agree with you. The nearest they get to "rock" or less mainstream music is My Chemical Romance, but they're now about as mainstream as it is possible to be. I like heavy metak, but you just don't hear it at all. I know that there are more pop fans out there, so I'm part of a minority, but I am definitely not the only one with these opinions
*Rory is fat  05-Mar-2007 15:15

Not everybody wants to listen to the latest music, most of it is just recycled garbage anyway. DJ's often play what they feel like and that is fair enough, but they should respect their audience and play some older music now and again if listeners request that kind of thing
*Music Box  13-Sep-2006 12:06

Why would you request a song that ain't new or "hot" most DJ's put the songs that are new, for promotion, I am a DJ for a radio station, I to have gotten requests but sometimes we dont get the text request
*Ortega  23-Aug-2006 17:29

I beleive all the music played on radios is aimed at teenagers because they will buy it I know for a fact that I definitly wont
