Reality TV shows aren't real life

Television has changed forever and not necessarily for the better in my opinion.  My concern is with that certain type of show known as ‘Reality TV’.

Too many reality tv shows on Sky Television

It would seem that there is absolutely no way of escaping this nonsense.  On just about every television station, there is at least one reality show; and sadly, they are becoming very popular here in the UK.  The public are regularly subjected to reality tv shows like "Big Brother" and "I’m a celebrity get me out of here".  I just can’t understand why people would want to watch this rubbish.  It’s even worse in the United States by all accounts, because the subject matter there goes from the sublime to the ridiculous!

Who says lying on the beach of Laguna is reality anyway?

Who really wants to watch people go on dates, or watch the ‘played out’ lives of teenagers with so much money they don't know what to do with it?  I certainly don't.  Plus, what really ARE the restrictions to getting on one of these reality tv shows?  And who says lying on the beach of Laguna is reality anyway?  When that's defined as reality, my dog will speak fluent English!

I even came across this stupid reality tv show where people go off and have plastic surgery so they can look like someone famous, it’s called “I want a famous face”.  Can you believe that?  What on earth is wrong with these people?  I don’t think that this is really a good message to be sending out to people.

How about the cops and firemen who are risking their lives every day, and the people suffering from cancer?  Isn't that reality?  I think Television should rethink what is reality and what's not.

in my humble opinion, the whole "Reality TV Shows" has taken off due to one reason alone, The genreal veiwing public are not given / have limited option's for other vewing entertainment. when I was a Child, there would be a decent veriaty of shows to watch, from the A team, to Hale and Pace and bullseye. Now though were being force fed reality shows, behind the sceenes reality shows, the "real life of XYZ Personality's", and very little in the likes of series based TV shows which the veiwing public can get attached to the characters and want to know how the story unfolds over the course of a season.

Whilst I have no problem with reality / talent shows, the veiwing public should not have it forced on them on practically all channels at prime time veiwing. Neither should we be forced to watch endless repeats of these show, or variations from other countries at prime time, I mean really Who is interested in X Factor USA if your in the UK ?

It has got to such a bad state with current UK TV programming that I have taken to downloading TV shows from the internet and have stopped watching television, now I am but one person, but if only 1 in a 100 are doing the same then the numbers mount up extremely quickly and these are numbers that should be watching and being exposed to advertising from the UK.

I grant you that Big Brother is worth discussing, if only because it presents a worthless, shabby reflection on our modern-day values. That millions of viewers should find interest in the antics of a few over-paid, talentless D-list so-called celebrities is simply sad. That newspapers and politicians should be getting het up over the racial or not-racial pronouncements of a woman who is not only half-coloured herself but also makes no secret of her own ignorance, is ridiculous. That we should care at all about the wounded feelings of some precious Bollywood princess who went into this with her eyes open and is being paid a small fortune for it is pathetic.

Masterchef is by far the only decent reality show. It's educational and inspiring not like Jordan and Peter aundres crap. Unless it's anything to do with cookery I switch these reality shows off.

The only true reality TV is your own life. If it’s not as exciting as you want it to be, there are things you can do to make it so.

Been there
If you never watch big brother then why are you able to compare the first with the last in terms of the people in it? You seem to know a lot about it.

Big Brother is not the beginning of mind control! It is just very cheap and easy to make; companies will keep producing this rubbish as long as people go on watching it.

Real mind control is accepting CCTV surveillance everywhere and laws which limit our freedoms.

People of Britain and indeed the world.
"Reality TV " is the begining of mind control.
The governments of the world are all buying into this as it continues to dumb the general population down.
When people are dumb the expect less, want less and are generally happy with less.
Take a close look at the people around you that "Would never miss BB".
They can all be described with one word.
MORON.
Look at the "housemates" from BB series 1 and compaire them to the morons in whatever number the last series was.
SWITCH OFF PEOPLE!

They are like a disease and seem to appeal mostly to teenagers and young women who buy celebrity gossip mags. As television, reality shows are of no merit as they are so forgettable and disposable. Mercifully Big Borether is being axed in England next year so this could be the beginning of the end for this junk.

Vaneps, I am sorry if I am telling you something that you already know but are you aware that if you hold down the “control” key while using the scroll wheel on your mouse, you can make the text on web sites larger? It also gets darker and easier to read. If you are using a laptop with no mouse you can hold down control and use the +key instead. The – key makes it smaller again.
I hope this helps.

I am someone with a visual handicap. I am not offended by capitalized posts. They are not harder to read for me but easier since the print is larger. I will go along with the rule as I am in this post but in reality a word in capital letters is just that. It is not shouting. Tghere is no way to shout on a written post. Anyway I too think reality shows are not reality by any means and I find the term "reality show" offensive.

My personal gripe is against such T/V programmes as Big Brother where aimless behaviour and foul language comes to the fore. I do not watch such programmes unless my finger slips on the remote but there are children in bedrooms all over the country, watching and listening, parents downstairs not knowing and sometimes not caring. What are the T/V companies doing to our youth other than teaching them that what they are seeing and hearing is normal. It is no wonder that this country has so many young folk in trouble.

I agree, leave them to it...however when I meet up with a friend for a coffee and they choose to fill me in on all the events in the big brother house I'm off in search of better conversation! Not before scoring them off my 'cool to go for a coffee with' list.

Personally I have never watched big brother and the myriad similar types of programmes. However a lot of people do have very simple tastes and very minimal intellectual needs and these types of programmes seem to give them a good deal of enjoyment and satisfaction.I say leave them alone to enjoy it.

I strongly suspect that we "RCTSC haters" are the vast - but silent - majority.

Isn't there something we can do about it?

Most of what has been said about 'reality' TV here already, I agree with. However, what I call not only 'reality' TV, but Reality,Celebrity, Talent Show Crap or RCTSC for short has ruined TV. Perhaps permanantly, thouth I hpe not!

The big problem is that one is almost 'bullied' into watching. Here in GB, it's impossible to get away from them! Switching to another channel or turning the TV off is not enough! For example, The BBC and ITV will wax lyrical about Channel 4's Big Brother. ITV will go on about BBC's Strictly Come Dancing and Last Choir Standing whilst the BBC drones on about ITV's X Factor, I'm a Celeb, Get Me Out of Here and Dancing on Ice!!!!! I turn on the radio and the same thing happens, BBC radio is on about BB, Dancing on Ice and I'm a Celeb!!!! And dont talk abpout the tabloid press in all this...hype, hype, hype!

The sooner this type of programming comes to an end the better. However, it will not happen as long as people allow themselves to act like sheep and be easily manipulated.

Ok, I used to wath big bro for the first few series, it was different, but now I am sick to the back teeth of reality TV. You can not switch the TV without seeing someone sat in a house doing nothing, someone humiliating themselves on a talent show, or someone painting their front room and some half a*sed celeb saying its not the right shade. It is dumbing down the nation, they wonder why people get depressed its because they come home from a low paid job they hate, put the TV on and some has been or wanabee is making megabucks by sitting in the Big Bro garden rubbing suncream on themselves!!!
WE NEED TO PUT A STOP TO THIS NOW!!. A lot of these shows go on because of the high viewing figures, this is not always the case, many people will just leave the TV on and not even be watching it. Or some people watch reality TV because there is nothing else on, well this is due to the other channels not wanting to compete with 'I used to be a celeb', 'big bro', 'I cant dance but I'll try anyway' etc etc.
My point is if we turn the TV off when they are on eventually they will get decomisioned and channels will start putting better dramas/films on. Please Please Please join me in trying bring back good TV!!!
If there is nothing on TV then read a book, go to the Gym, spend time with your partner ANYTHING! just dont submit to watching celebs jumping through a hole in the wall.

Dont forget we are paying a TV license to watch this stuff WHY WHY WHY are we doing this???????

These programmes are worthless, conveyor belt television that seem to appeal to people who buy celeb mags and trash newspapers like the Daily Star. I notice the Daily Star is bigging up the return of Celebrity Big Brother as if it's the second coming. The fact is these programmes are worthless junk that are instantly forgettable, cannot be repeated and cannot be made into DVDs as the viewers forget about them as some as one series ends and another starts. I for one would wish OFCOM would step in and ban the whole genre as it is getting beyond a joke. Can't people realise reality shows are boring refuges for untalented ex celebs or unemployables.

This type of programming is designed for the sheep - the mindless masses - for those who have no life - for the dumbing down of humans - designed to aid the destruction and very fabric of family life.

Stop this garbage now!

IT IS PURE TRASH - TRAILER TRASH

Television programming is at the all time low.

MORONIZING THE MASSES.

I was cycling through the channels one day and came across Big Brother After Dark in one of the movie channels. It perked my interest thinking this would be uncut reality tv and for some reason I thought this might be better. I flipped to it and there before me I watched the contestants of the show eating Pizza. Eating pizza, talking about pizza, drinking soda, and talking about soda. Nothing more! That's disgusting! I want to meet every single person who watched that show with eagerness for the next word of a conversation they could just see in their companies lunch room. I want to meet them and give them some chemical to keep them from having children, the world doesn't need anymore D-bags!

Stop Reality TV - 31-Mar-08 23:44

WHY? WHY? Because it's cheap? Is that why? You know what's cheaper than reality? Just dead air! That's what your reality show might as well be to me! Dead Air! I will be on the internet or maybe at the mailbox getting my Netflix DVD, ignoring your crap reality shows. ABC, NBC, CBS, and all the others just slow the fun wagon down on these things. Because 1 reality show did good you've got to crank out dozens more. You look at ratings and throw a scripted show off instantly if there aren't 30 million people watching it. Seems your happy if 2 people watch your reality show all season long. Give me scripts or give me nothing at all! ABC just announced that their entire summer line up is ALL Reality TV. WTF? The problem is if a reality show fails you don't care you've got twenty more just like it with a new host and a new name. Then your ratings fall and you blame the damn scripted shows. Nobody can show up for the scripts if you've put them in a circle of reality and expect people to tune in when your dealing crap. STOP REALITY TV! STOP STOP STOP!

"Reality tv shows aren't real life" - revolutionary thinking right there!

It's about the real, (non-acted), actions of the people in the bizarre situations on television. Not "reality" its self.

It's not necessarily meant to be enjoyed, like most modern art infact. Just to provoke a reaction. Which it clearly has done to great effect. Well done everyone.
