Every week day morning I drive a journey of approximately 12 miles along a single carriageway. There are speed cameras on some stretches of this road; two sets in 30 mph built up zones, and a set in a 40 mph zone.

I’m fed up with people driving dangerously and attempting stupid overtaking manoeuvres on this stretch of road.  The road has 30 mph signs, which appear at regular intervals along much of the route.  Also, part of the road is very narrow and winding, enclosed by high hedges, sometimes necessitating vehicles travelling in one direction to stop to allow a large lorry or single-decker bus to pass.  Incredibly, this stretch is a 40 mph limit, which to my mind is absolutely crazy.

Overtaking on an A class road, fortunately this one is wide enough and not so dangerous

I have had idiots in cars and idiots on bikes overtake me on this part of the road causing me to brake to let them back into their rightful lane lest they hit an oncoming vehicle.  Note that by the time they get to the speed camera, their speed is under the limit anyway.  It’s just downright dangerous and stupid.  In the 30 mph limits where there are signs but no speed cameras, but potentially there are school children crossing, cars, or people on horses emerging from tree-clad junctions, I still regularly have people overtake me.  It’s absolutely insane behaviour on the road and someone is going to get seriously hurt one day.

When I drive on this road, I keep to the limits and if you find yourself overtaking me in future you will have to put up with a blast from the very loud horn which I am about to have fitted.  I really hope that it gives you a tremendous fright and makes you swerve off into a ditch, not hurting anyone else of course.

There, I feel better already!

Black Fiat driver overtakes me in 30 mph zone where speed camera facing other way in Hambleton, Lancashire. I drove at the speed limit and he was getting close prior to this but impatience got the better of him.

It happened on 27/10/07 at about 15:25 but due to other traffic ahead I caught up with him and noted his number.

He eventually turned off along Moss House Lane.

This type of driver will always take his problems with him.

James: this happens to me practically every day. I stick to the 30 mph speed limit, but almost every day on my journey to and from work I get some idiot overtaking me, sometimes horn blaring/lights flashing, because HE/SHE doesn't want to stick to the speed limit. And yet these plonkers never seem to be the ones that get caught by the speed cameras. Sometimes life is so unfair !!

Actually, you'll find that it's a double solid line you shouldn't overtake on. If the line is "dotted or dashed" on the side nearest you then it's okay - as it is in this case. That said, just because it is legal to overtake - doesn't meant it is safe to do so and in some cases it can be considered "dangerous driving". Some people are pretty stupid and will overtake in crazy places. The worst I saw recently was actually in a 30mph zone. How nuts is that?

Has anyone noticed that the car in the photo above was overtaking where there is a solid white line? Overtaking on a solid white line means a £60 fine and three points on your licence as well!

"In reply to pepipoo. If this car is overtaking safely- who took this photo?? I'm glad it wasn't me!!"

You can see by the angle in the picture its taken from the road side, he is in fact overtaking safely but I think this is just an overtaking example and not dirrectly aplicable to this article

"These motorcyclists driving all over the countryside, making a horrible noise, are an absolute menace. It seems to be the latest craze. They don't seem to be actually going anywhere"

Do not generalise, I drive a motorbike on a nice day and sometimes im not going anywhere but are you going anywhere on a horse? I go out to enjoy the countryside, my bike makes noise, but its well within legal limits as the exaust is certified to british standards as is required by law else you dont get an MOT certificate. Horses practicaly stop all traffic for a short amount of time while they pass, I am more than happy to do this, just think for a second and dont be such a hypocrite.

To the article tho, its 40mph for a reason, if someone can overtake safely let them, you sound like an absolute moron, im sure there overtaking for a reason which leads me to believe your just a driver who lacks confidence, anyway if someone gets hurt, as long aas your driving safely let them worry about it. thats my view anyways, thankyou all

Ah I fear it may take more than the passing of years for you though, Caroline. Your comments are positively childish.

Inciting people to take the law into their own hands is "perfectly legal". What planet are you on??!! You really do talk some drivel. It amazes me that you have advanced so far with so little idea of how to converse. Just show your fellow offices what you have written and see if they are impressed.! No more to say to you. Jabber on all you like. Good-bye.

"Oh no, not Miss 36 year old PC Know-it-all Plummer again. I have already told you how tiresome you are. This is a gripe site and most people like to gripe at you. Live with it. I wonder if your superiors would approve of your doing this! I don't think so!!Adios."

It is a gripe site. You're right. So I can gripe too. I don't have any SUPERIORS. I have the occasional 'Senior' officer...but none of them are 'superior' to me. As I'm a supervisor myself, and quite high in the 'chain of command'...there are only a few other ranks higher..5 to be exact. What I write her is perfectly legal, so it wouldn't matter a cow's tail what my 'senior' officers thought. Put that in your pipe and smoke it...
Back to topic..if you can manage that level of attention...

Piano wire...neck height would be tempting , Nikki! We recently had a holiday in Scotland. Sitting by a quiet loch, enjoying the peace, and then these brain dead lunatics come racing along- deafening everyone for miles around. Its time the police started checking the exhausts on these idiots' bikes and fining them heavily for speeding...but they are too busy catching easy targets on the motorways- usually families going out for the day and letting their speed creep just over the limit while not concentrating.

Wrote Animal Lover.

So, Animal Lover, you believe its more important to prosecute a biker for a loud exhaust than a motorist exceeding the 70mph speed limit.

And that motorist on the motorway, the family in the car...who you describe as 'not concentrating'....Not exactly the frame of mind you want to be into when you're travelling at 177 feet per second. (Which is 79mph..the speed which enforcement takes place on a motorway)...

Of course, you know how to enforce the law better than the professionals..from your armchair, don't you Animal Lover?
