Stupid bad and dangerous driving on a narrow road

Every week day morning I drive a journey of approximately 12 miles along a single carriageway. There are speed cameras on some stretches of this road; two sets in 30 mph built up zones, and a set in a 40 mph zone.

I’m fed up with people driving dangerously and attempting stupid overtaking manoeuvres on this stretch of road.  The road has 30 mph signs, which appear at regular intervals along much of the route.  Also, part of the road is very narrow and winding, enclosed by high hedges, sometimes necessitating vehicles travelling in one direction to stop to allow a large lorry or single-decker bus to pass.  Incredibly, this stretch is a 40 mph limit, which to my mind is absolutely crazy.

Overtaking on an A class road, fortunately this one is wide enough and not so dangerous

I have had idiots in cars and idiots on bikes overtake me on this part of the road causing me to brake to let them back into their rightful lane lest they hit an oncoming vehicle.  Note that by the time they get to the speed camera, their speed is under the limit anyway.  It’s just downright dangerous and stupid.  In the 30 mph limits where there are signs but no speed cameras, but potentially there are school children crossing, cars, or people on horses emerging from tree-clad junctions, I still regularly have people overtake me.  It’s absolutely insane behaviour on the road and someone is going to get seriously hurt one day.

When I drive on this road, I keep to the limits and if you find yourself overtaking me in future you will have to put up with a blast from the very loud horn which I am about to have fitted.  I really hope that it gives you a tremendous fright and makes you swerve off into a ditch, not hurting anyone else of course.

There, I feel better already!

the worst examples of dangerous overtaking ive seen is probably in sussex on the A272. The road is very bendy and people routinly overtake on blind bends and on double white lines even in poor weather conditions or at night! The other bad example was on the A4 near Salisbury. The speed limit was 60mph but because there were parked cars on both sides of the road in order to see the torusit attractions most lowed down to about 40mph. One vehicle overtook (without signalling) a queue of aprox 6 cars despite the fact id walked on to the road to walk past a vehicle that had parked on the pavement. I was nearly run over!!! (had to frantically get off the road!)

I have known a number of young lads who complain about the extortionate amount of insurance they have to pay. However, the idiots who cause accidents are usually some boy racer in a Golf. The only accident I have ever had was being shunted by a boy racer. I was stationary at the time behind two other cars who were letting out a vehicle from the right on a busy road.

His defence - I stopped too suddenly. This crumbled when I pointed out that a) I had been stationary, b) however I may or may not have stopped would make no difference had he kept a proper distance from me (I did not shunt the car in front, having left a good distance between us) and c) did he not see the other two cars ahead of me which had also stopped or was he imagining I would simply continue driving and, somehow, miraculously pass through them?

I was driving in Wales near Presteigne, it was harvest time and the road was windy single-track with high hedges and passing places. There were ample signs of intense agricultural activity. We heard some idiot in a hot hatch approaching from behind, pedal to the metal and the scum was desperate to pass and I let him, because I thought it would be fun. True to form, he roared off in a a cloud of rubber smoke and exhaust and then came the screech of rubber on tarmac. He'd only gone a few hundred metres or so when he encountered a tractor and trailer round a blind bend. He only just avoided a Darwin award, but I'm sure he must have discovered that the colour of adrenaline is brown.

What a lovely road, that would be a top class A road in Cornwall where I live. A few years ago I was driving on a similar road that had a straight portion in it. The speed limit was 60 mph and I was doing about 55 mph in my Audi 100 Estate. In the opposite oncoming lane there was a combine harvester with six cars behind it. Suddenly I saw a glint of light reflecting off the windscreen of a seventh car that had pulled out and was now accelerating towards me in my lane driving into the sun. No chance of him getting by with the "door" closing at 90mph, Formula One power would be needed for that. Now whilst an Audi 100 would probably marmalise a yob in a so called hot hatch, what about my No Claims Bonus and my car? I slammed on the brakes which smoked the tyres and with this "defensive driving" I kept the "door" open long enough for the lout to carve-up the combine harvester. We've got a lot of shrines on Cornish roads, wonder if he's now one of them?

Nikki,

You aren't much better by stereotyping boy racers as being from cities. Of course due to population density there will be more boy racers from the city, but it wouldn't surprise me that on a per capita basis, small towns will have more boy racers as a percentage of the total population than the big cities do. That's certainly my experience.

I am sure your exhibition of equally dangerous and selfish driving really impresses other drivers, by forcing someone to take evasive manoeuvres, probably in the face of innocent oncoming traffic. Admittedly the other drivers actions are also wrong but what possible excuse can you offer for behaving in such manner by indulging in the wholly illegal practice of road racing?

2. Going into a right turn lane to cheat the queue while waiting at traffic lights and going straight ahead

Lol, people that do this regularly find that my car will accelerate faster than theirs. I love to sit with them on the side of me pulling off the lights, approaching the lights/central reservation and watching them brake and try to rejoin. Of course, It's usually responded to about 200 meters down the road where the driver cuts up and dives around the road to pull up beside you and show you how unhappy he is at you thwarting his illegal manouver.

At approx 25 to 5 pm on Sunday 7th Feburary on the Wolverhampton Ring Road this nutcase of a driver was undertaking, weaving in and out between lanes and barging his way between vehicles to cheat the queues.

Does he come from somewhere near The Snake Pass in The Peak District?

It appears that Audi drivers are taking over the reputation that BMW drivers used to have.

Lately, I have noticed more courtesy from BMW drivers but the main disrespect to other motorists and bad lane discipline now goes to Audi drivers.

Today, three Audi drivers drove dangerously when overtaking or passing me in addition to speeding or going through a red light and driving with harassment.

1. Overtaking by crossing continuous double white lines and doing at least 70 in a 50 zone;

2. Going into a right turn lane to cheat the queue while waiting at traffic lights and going straight ahead;

3. Going through a red light into traffic flowing at right angles causing some to slam their brakes on as he crossed two lanes to turn right.

The registration of the one who went into the right lane to go ahead was A4PTK and the vehicie is a Blue Audi A8 TDI QUATTRO Auto which happened about 21:30 on 18/01/10 at the junction of Chain House Lane and Penwortham Way on the A582.

Is he the owner of a graphics tablet firm?

I observed the number while the lights were red and to my belief he did what I suspected he might.

Why do they think they deserve preferential treatment over other motorists? If this is their mentality and are they managers or bosses? If so then they have probably cheated their way there and bullied their colleagues - but then that is the new breed of elitist yobs for incompetence in management - be seen by your status and wealth and use your car as a status symbol to treat other motorists as less important.

People who think they are elite because of their status are mostly evil and inferior - take Tony Blair as an example.

Spare a thought for these obsessive drivers - they are so unhappy with the truth of their internal capabilities being way below that of many they become obsessed in trying to make themselves look better and will go to whatever length their assets will take them to.

They don't care how they win as long as they come out on top, but then their success is often tainted.

Their behaviour is a symptom of rage and envy of those who are genuinely more capable than them so they try to make up for this.

If you are a decent driver and want to be seen by what you are and not what your car can do then please be grateful that you are not perverted by such an obsession these drivers have. You are a better person but don't let your frustrations take control, just let these morons commit themselves to an early grave with the stress they bring on into their lives due to not accepting the facts of their weaknesses.

About 7.30 pm on 8th Nov somewhere between A446 (Belfry) and A38 for Lichfield this backside sniffer was so close he was obviously eager to overtake.

The cars in front of me and I were at the speed limit but he saw an opportunity to overtake on double continuous white lines.

Shows how power and money goes to the head of those who don't have the intelligence to be what they want to appear like. E.g. A manager who is corrupt and a bully because he hasn't worked his way up - like a Tony Blair.

Dangerous and aggressive overtaking and cutting back in when there was insufficient space to make the manoeuvre safely.

All this pertained to impatience and contempt of the law as well as poor lane discipline.

Something of the 'I deserve more than you so get out of my way' arrogance here.

He enjoyed snogging the car in front with how close he was to it.

Mr S

How can a photo show the progress of a manoeuvre to determine whether it was legal or not when it is a snapshot?

Ignorance is bliss which you should be more aware of.

You weren't that muppet in a small white car which out of impatience and contempt of the law dangerously overtook my BMW when I was doing 30 in a 30 zone along Ballam Road between South Park and Green Drive Golf Club?

Typical of youngsters trying to make their boneshakers which is all they can afford look better than bigger cars.

I don't know what it is but the smaller cars with immature drivers who have inadequacy complexes are the biggest threats on the roads today. They take every opportunity to overtake me illegally just because I adhere to the speed limit.

They make fools of themselves and most people can see through them as they are like cowards on The Weakest Link.

Most of them will get their comeuppance in the not-too-distant future and then it will be too late. I take down their registration number and find out more about their driving history by means of which I cannot divulge on here.

I'd be particularly careful upon wishing a member of the public harm, let alone telling the world that it will be you distracting drivers while they are performing an overtaking manoeuvre.
Regarding the photo, the Highway Code states
"Rule 128 Double white lines where the line nearest to you is broken. This means you may cross the lines to overtake if it is safe, provided you can complete the manoeuvre before reaching a solid white line on your side. White direction arrows on the road indicate that you need to get back onto your side of the road."
I'm sure if the Highways Agency deemed that stretch dangerous (through accident statistics, road surveying etc.) that both double lines would be solid.

Sigh !! You see this the whole time in the countryside Kryton ! Little Boy Racer out from the big city for the day thinks he knows it all. He doesn't; he doesn't know **** all about the countryside, that just around the next bend is the entrance to a field where the farmer has been ploughing and the road is now slick with mud. Or there is a small village coming up, with a school, and it's 3.30 and the kids are coming out. Or a riding school, or a host of other hazards.

They pollute our beautiful countryside with their ghastly thumping noise that I am told is "music", empty their ashtrays and their Big Mac wrappers out onto the lanes as they race along, oblivious, uncaring or both to the mayhem that they leave behind them ! And then they have the cheek to say how much they enjoy a day out in the peace and quiet of the countryside !!

Dangerous driving in limited zones I stick to the speed limit and this in all too many cases, is seemingly a mortal sin. I'm driving just below the 30mph or 20mph, as the powers that be are very fussy about such things. And there's an idiot, less than half a car's length behind me. Front fogs and pumping music in much evidence. Either in the zone or just as I exit the limited zone, at the most inappropriate/dangerous place, the following driver overtakes. Blarring horn, maybe an offensive hand gesture, then they cut me up and scream off down the road. Only to have to slam on the brakes behind the next soon to be harassed road-user.

From the picture we can see that the dotted line is on the queue's side so the red car was legally overtaking just by this measure. However, we can also see that this stretch of road is a clearly a BLIND SUMMIT which overtakings are very dangerous -- while the red car obviously originated from the bottom of the queue, not from behind the lorry. To make this clear, if a car was on the other side of road, they could never have seen each other and it would be head-on crash.

Sticking to the 30 mph speed limit when some NG02XGN Ford MONDEO ZETEC TDCI pillock tailgated me and then overtook at about 40 mph.

Seems the driver was frustrated with me for not going faster - I could see the impatience getting to him.

Sorry mate but you have just demonstrated that you have an incompetence allowance you are granted by right which you are using.

What is your incompetence in? Not adhering to the law, not doing well in your job, unable to work out numbers in your head (especially so if you think 30 is 40)?
