It never ceases to amaze me how some people can be so prejudiced about the way you look and in particular about your hair style.  It seems that people do in fact judge the book by its cover and if you don't fit in with the rest of the crowd you can expect different and sometimes even hostile treatment.

Occasionally I go for something a bit different with my hair style and clothes; so I recently decided to be bit more radical than normal and opt for a mohican style haircut.  I got the usual funny remarks about mid life crisis (maybe true in my case!), BA Baracas, I ain't gettin' on no plane!, Jake from the Tweenies and all that kind of stuff.

No problem, kinda funny and well I guess it goes with the territory really.

That sad and unfortunate fact however, is that the older and more conservative folk seem to have a problem with this.  They don't care for all that and seem to have some preconceived notion that you are thug about to go out and you are about to rob someone or break the law.  You can see it in their eyes, the sideways looks and whispering.  If they can, they'll make life difficult for you and in their way let you know that you're not welcome.

Mohican hairstyle, long hair, short hair?

I quite object to this kind of treatment.  Just because you look different, it doesn't automatically follow that you are out to cause trouble.  A mohican hairstyle, long hair, extremely short hair, it is all the same in that you're either in that minority or you're not and you blend in with Joe public.  Why do some people have this attitude?  We're not hurting anyone, and it doesn't change who we are inside.

There are plenty of really sick, violent and downright nasty people in the world.  The vast majority of them you may pass on the street and you wouldn't even give them a second glance.

Is it... because they look normal?

I've had my mohawk for over a year now, and absolutely love having it. Standing at 6'11 already made me stand out, so I figured why not just go for the gusto about a year ago. Its pretty crazy looking standing at over 8feet tall on my head but its fun.

I've found more positive than negative reaction, but the negatives are fairly harsh. Just insecure folks voicing the frustration of their lives stuck in a box I figure.

The biggest challenge is just keeping it up as it gets longer, but I find lots of helpful people and tutorials out there on communities like MohawksRock.com and other groups around. Glad to see you are liking your mohican.

Mate, sod em! Do they pay your electric bill, car tax, put food in your belly and clean out you hamster cage? No!

Don't care a monkeys what they think and am sure you'd think more of them as a person if they commented to your face.

I'm 34, I've had a mohawk for 3 weeks now. My hair as I was growing it out again was representing Napoleon Dynamite hair, and I was tired of it. I don't see curly mohawks very often at all--I love how quickly I can put it up. I also have an 8 gauge septum piercing. I've wanted a mohawk for many years but never had the courage to get one until recently.

I've been shy most of my life, and I've never gotten in as many conversations with people as after I got this haircut. People will come up to me out of the blue just to start a conversation. Because of this, my shyness is starting to disappear. I've gained SO much self confidence from the way I have been treated. It's nothing short of AMAZING.

The people who don't like it are people who I probably wouldn't get along with anyway (old ladies with a poodle-perm, ultra-conservative businesspeople), so why should I care about that?

Getting a mohawk was the best decision I've made in years. I don't regret it AT ALL.

My take on the matter is as such: if someone makes negative judgments on my personal character based on my appearance then they are probably not the kind of person that I would like to be acquainted with.

I am a 22 year old female, and recently shaved my head (but have a mini mohawk now). I got a lot of questions concerning my new 'do (or lack thereof), but all in all I haven't actually experienced anyone being necessarily harsh toward me. I think it is partially a matter of attitude and how you view yourself. If you view yourself as an outsider then you will act as such, and then of course people will mark you as "bad". Just smile at people and be kind and empathetic and they will usually warm up to you, and perhaps they will learn a valuable lesson not to judge a book by it's cover. As for us minorities who take the non-conventional approach to styling our hair, it is our duty to be positive representatives for others like us.

Now for the ***holes who glare at you in return to your smile...they obviously don't deserve to talk to you or to be in your glorious presence! Forget about them!

So all in all, I think freaking your looks up a bit is a positive experience: you can weed out the shallow judgmental people quicker and find the true, kind and sincere people quicker.

Yeah, but Mohawks, spikes etc are just NOT new! They've been around before, particularly in the late 1970's. You might want me to have a reaction to this appearance today, but I've seen it and yes done it (myself) all before and now hairstyle appearances like this barely register. The only reaction I have to this appearance is one of nostalgia - to how things used to look 30 years ago. Back then about 1/3rd of adolescents in the UK had that kind of style. The number today is a small fraction of that without a doubt.

I do not pre-judge you at all. But you're wanting to rub dogs##t in my face is a clear statement of the fact that you cannot say the same thing about yourself. I do not care a jot about your appearance, you can't get over this, it seems. You think I should stand in awe of you or something? Grow up. I dress straight today, you don't, big deal! Get over yourself.

Haha, yes, I know what its like to be discriminated against because of how you look. I am a Deathrocker,I used to put my hair into liberty spikes but I'm getting sick of that now because it takes so long, I'm gonna either go for devil locks or a deathhawk or some other dark and spooky hairstyle. Some people are just so single minded and tight a***ed that they just cant accept different clothing and stuff like that. But dont worry people like that are pathetic and arent worth bothering about. Sooner or later theyll get over it. Yes Chris, sooner or later youll learn to accept it, and yes you do deserve to have your face rubbed in dog***t when your just putting your prejudices first and judging them all before you even meet one.

I have a mohawk for since 2 years and people have prejudices (esp police :). its my most fav haircut ever I love it and I keep it. when you talk to people they often change their mind and this is a good moment. because maybe it helps them to do this in other situations, too. I think it can help people to become more open and tolerant. all others are not worth talking about ^^ cheers from germany. Why do I have to capitalize I ???

when I was 17, a senior in high school,I shaved my head into a mohawk. I kept it like that for a little over a year, changing the colors and the way I would spike it. I loved it, it was my favorite hair style and I would have kept it for alot longer if I was able to. the problem was that I needed a job. people generally speaking don't hire little girls who pierce their faces and shave their heads. its the way the world sees us and people in the main stream with closed minds dont want to be associated with or have their business associated with this sort of style.

I had to let my hair grow back when I was almost 19. it is truely unfortunate thatI was forced to change something that I loved about myself in order to become socially accpetable and get a job, but its all part of growing up and realizing that people are not going to change and if you want something you need to do whatever it is to ensure that you can have it. but if the world was to one day embrace the punk culture as just another lifestyle and mohawked individuals, I would shave my head again in a heart beat!
