Two weeks ago, I took my car to a certain garage on Buckingham Road for a full service and MOT.  I usually do most of the work on the car myself, but once a year I like to do this.

I’ve been going there for a few years and up until now they’ve provided what I would consider to be a good service.  Anyway, they serviced my car and I picked it up and took it home.  The next morning, there's a huge pool of oil under the car.  I had a look and saw oil all over the sump.  I thought to myself, 'dozy spanner monkeys haven't tightened up the plug', so I checked it and was surprised that it was actually on tight.

I took the car back to the garage and they said 'sorry mate, we used the wrong washer on the plug'.  Ok, fair enough I thought, as long as they put it right I’m happy and no hard feelings.

I took the car home, woke up next day to another pool of oil.  I had to use the car to get to work, so I topped the oil up and set off with the intention of dropping the car off at the garage again in the evening.  I got to the end of the road and there's a loud clattering noise coming from the engine bay.

Auto garage, car servicing, poor quality service, unreliable mechanic

I opened up the bonnet to see exactly what the problem was; sounded very much like the big ends on their way out.  I called the garage and they said 'don't drive it, we’ll pick it up with a trailer'.  A short time later, the car gets picked up as they said they would and I wait to hear what the problem is.  Later that afternoon, the garage called back and said 'It's not the engine, it's your steering pump; the bearings have exploded and there's power steering fluid everywhere.  It's nothing to do with us, you need to pay for getting it transported over, new belts and a new pump'.

Okay, let’s think about this, because to me it doesn't really make any sense. First of all, they have had two opportunities to spot the leaking fluid and didn't.  Secondly they lied to me about the 'wrong washer on the sump plug'.  Finally, and most importantly, if they had spotted the steering fluid leak in the first place, my pump may well have not died.  After all, when I spotted what I thought was an oil leak the pump wasn't making any bad noises.

I think they have been completely incompetent throughout and I don't think I should be paying for any of this.  As you would expect, the garage doesn't agree.  What do you think?

I have just had my peugeot 307 'repaired', and I say repaired in the loosest possible terms, by Pratt and Gelsthorpe at Newark. They are Peugeot dealers. The brakes had a knock when they were applied, and a replacement modified exhasust flange and the pollen filter needed replacing too. They charged my £157.97 for the work but the brakes still knocked when I drove the vehicle away. Their director Richard Gelsthorope was very unhelpfull indeed, very money concious and the service manager Fred Elner were very rude and unhelpfull too. They refused to put their defective workmanshipe right unless I paid more money. I have since reported them to Peugeot and to Consumer Direct. I would not use this garage again and certainly would not recommend anyone to ever use this garage. It seems to me as if all they want is your money and do not give damn whether they upset the customer or not and have absolutely no regard for customer satifaction nor goodwill. I feel completely ripped off!

I recently had my car serviced at Shakespeare Street garage at Lincoln. Although this was supposed to be a major service they missed out a lot of things that should have been done in even in the most basic of services, let alone a major service. They left the car dirty, they didnt even investigate the a fault which they were asked to do. The service actually worked out dearer than at the dealership in the end. They used to be really good value for money there but they have hiked the prices up a lot and money now seems to mean more to them than service. Then, when I collected it they had used it to prop a garage door open. Its not as if my car was an old banger or anything either.

Alway use a garage you trust and get second opinions I run a garage and have no issues with customers getting our work inspected or our diagnostics or quotes being scrutinised.Good garages have nothing to fear and a re usually busy.

I dont think I trust any garage now. For instance I took my car for a service with Nationwide/AA and it cost around £140 plus another £20 or so to change a fluid (cant remember now) as they said it looked dirty. The car felt no better for having the service. A few days later I took the car to another garage who claimed to be Ford specialists to get the plugs and coil pack changed and they said thecar didnt look like it had been serviced at all....

From now on I'm going to get the parts from ebay and do the service myself. I'll just get all the information I need from the Internet.

I think that you have a case against these incompetent monkeys. They make the talented mechanics out there look bad. Follow up and don't back down!!!

I serviced brand new car with prestigecarservicing. When car returned from the service I had suspicion that not all necessary work was done. It was 9000 miles service which should be carried as per car manufacturer specification. Invoice I got from prestigecarservicing did not contain details of work carried out. I asked for detailed - called their phone line. I did not get any new invoice. I asked again for detailed invoice by regular mail sending letter to the address from original invoice. No response. I faxed the copy of letter and got response. I was assured that professional engineers checked everything and all the necessary work what required by manufacturer was carried out. However the impressive list of work carried out was not signed. It listed among other that hand brake travel was adjusted and that rear screen wash was checked. The manufacturer of my car requires handbrake travel adjusted exactly after first 9000 miles. I suspected that it was not done because car returned from prestige service with handbrake handle working exactly the same. It went high during 1st year. Dealer confirmed that is normal in this car and that is why manufacturer requires it to be adjusted during the 9000 miles service. Prestige did not do it unfortunately. I tried to complain. There is no complaint information on their web site. I send the fax again with complain and got no response after two weeks so far. Returning to rear screen wash – it did not work in my car at all. I was about to report it to dealer. But according to the list I got from prestige car servicing it was checked. Seems engineer who serviced my car did not notice the fact that it was not working.
They also done “engine flush” and informed me it is required by car manufacturer. Additional cost £25.When I asked about it I got no response. Other garages are doing engine flush for £5-£7. So finally, prestige car service was more expensive than dealer’s service and cost me a lot of stress.

And me chap, the same garage conned me too. Why do they keep getting away with it.

How can it be nothing to do with them? It would be the biggest coincidence ever. You shouldn't pay a penny more than the original quote for the work they were supposed to do.

Went to kwikfit for replacement brakes to rear, they sent the car out knowing they had crossed threaded the wheel nuts to the hub.Took it back after hearing a noise and they replaced them free of charge, saying it could of been like that in the 1st place. Anyone know who to contact as I am making a complaint?

I have used Premier Clutch recently and have recommended them to friends and family. I received fast efficient service. The staff were very friendly and they were able to explain the problems with my car in laymen terms. Above all they gave me the most competitive price out of all the garages I went to. I will be remaining a loyal customer and encourage others to do the same.
