Dog fouling - my town is now one big dog toilet!

I'm sick and tired of lazy dog owners and the way they allow their dogs to foul the footpaths in the town where I live.  In the last few years they have rapidly transformed what was once quite a picturesque and bustling mining town into one great big dog toilet.

There's absolutely no excuse for this other than sheer laziness and a pig-headed "I'll let my dog crap where I feel like" attitude.  These people obviously don't give a damn about the place where they live and I should imagine that their houses and gardens are equally disgusting.  There again perhaps not, because they bring their animals around to foul the streets outside my house don't they?

The lazy dog owners and the fouled pavements really annoy me, but what annoys me even more is the fact that they seem to get away with doing it without any repercussions.

Fixed penalty - There are signs posted on practically every lamp post...

Dog fouling sign along with dog mess There are signs posted on practically every lamp post (and I mean every one) warning that there's a fixed penalty for dog fouling, yet they still do it and they still get away with it.  Presumably no one ever (or rarely) gets a fine, because the amount of excrement on the pavements would certainly seem to indicate that this is the case.  I feel so strongly about this now that I'll be contacting our council regarding this.  In fact maybe some photographic evidence would add weight to the case and some of these blighters can be fined!

I must admit that I've not actually seen anyone in broad daylight letting their dog foul the pavement.  Presumably they are ashamed to do this in public and quite rightly so.  But my partner has on a couple of occasions recently witnessed a dog in the act of fouling with its owner patiently waiting whilst it does its business.  There's nothing wrong with that because a dog must go.  However, on each of these occasions the owner then carried on walking their dogs with absolutely no attempt made to pick up the mess.

As I said earlier, maybe some photographic evidence would result in a fine and then perhaps persuade these people to change their ways.  No one wants to be a 'poop detective' photographing dog walkers, but something needs to be done because it's a smelly disgusting health hazard and it's turning the town into an eyesore.

The best of it is dog pooh which has lain rock solid frozen and hidden under the snow for a few days, snow which is now beginning to thaw. Slip up on this stuff!

Can't Bear the Pooh - 6-Feb-12 18:28

A number of years ago I wrote to my local council (Wakefield) complaining that walking down a particular road - just outside a high school - was like playing dog turd hopscotch and would they mind installing some dog litter bins. I don't have anything against dogs, have grown up with them all my life and like Grumpyxx, I welcome the sight of them as they approach me. I just thought that if the council installed dog litter bins, it might make dog owners use them rather than leaving it for me to do an Irish jig around.

Unfortunately, the council's reply wasn't very promising. They told me that they couldn't afford to install one or two bins in the vicinity and instead, they would spray paint a sign on the ground saying 'Pick up or pay up'. The signs have weathered away over the years though it's not as if anyone took any notice. The mess around the school eased but really, dog walkers just moved to the local playing field instead. A bigger expanse of land to soil up, with turds being harder to spot - ideal, why didn't they think of it before? I feel sorry for the local teams who play on this field every Saturday and Sunday! I wouldn't fancy my chances having being tackled and taking a fall to the ground.

I've fallen foul of this... ahem.

I was putting a few Christmas lights up outside our house at the beginning of December. I unravelled the line of lights over our front lawn to stop them tangling up as I installed them. As I hadn't cut my lawn since September/October there were some longer tufts of grass dotted about.

I needn't go into mass detail but suffice to say, I found a pile of dog muck in one of these tufts which I thankfully managed to avoid both stepping in and dragging the lights through. I'm not sure how long it'd been there but it would've been impossible to pick up! This particular dumping was very close to the house too, it's not as if it was very close to the pavement, it was about 2 foot away from our front door!

Think yourself lucky you didn't get dog excrement put through your own letterbox, Steve. That's what would happen - and more - if an ALF member caught you kicking a dog who'd poo-ed on the pavement. They're probably watching this thread right now.

I reported exactly the same thing to my local council a few years back. their solution was to drop leaflets through peoples letter boxes. Did it stop the fouling - of course not!

Grummpy farmers were forced to clean up their act because of their chemicals & manure leaching into our waterways. Why throw red herrings at legitimate complaints Grumpy? Dog wardens should act on our behalf they simply don't. When was a dog owner last fined for neglecting their responsibility instead of being lectured on the error of their ways? I am a dog lover. No more red herrings please grumpy, nobody wants to eliminate dogs so why smake such a stupid statement, just certain owners, who are being treated with kid gloves by dog wardens.

What a dreadful fuss over nothing. How would you ever manage if you lived in the country - with the stink of manure at every turn and horse poo on the roads? I get the impression that you'd rather exterminate dogs and, possibly their owners too, if it meant living in a poo-free world.

I certainly wouldn't. Of course owners should train their dogs and should clear up after them too, but the sight of a unwelcome deposit on the pavement is more than tolerated when I catch sight of a wonderful woofie - preferably a Golden Retriever - coming my direction to fuss and enjoy.

A dog free world would be much worse than a poo free world.

I agree fully with you in regard to dog mess. It is absolutely everywhere in the village I live in. It is bad enough on footpaths but people let their dogs foul just outside peoples gates, it is absolutely disgusting. What concerns me is kids use these streets to walk to school. I have even seen piles of mess flattened by pram wheels or bikes, absolutely vile.

Yes spot on. I saw a pile of dog foul so big a small toddler would of been Knee deep! I don't know whats more disgusting the foul or the owners lazy attitude. It's supposed to be cheaper to walk than drive but in reality you have to employ someone with a jet wash to blast your shoes before you come in the house or walk constantly staring at the floor. On some council estates if you walk with your head down you won't be returning with your wallet or valuables. MINGING!!!!!!

Couldn't agree more. Disgusting dog owners should named and shamed (and their dogs taken from them).

I don't know where you live, but the worst place I have ever seen for this is Brussels.
